“Best cocktails in town!”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

I love a good cocktail, in fact I drove 4 hours to enjoy several of these liquid libations. Of the 6-7 that I had none were bad. It was a shame that I didn't have more time to try more. Excellent selection of liquors and exceptional staff, true professionals who are proud of their trade. The place was very busy for a thursday and 4-5 bartenders were constantly in motion. I had drinks made by 3 different people and all did a great job. Considering the size of the two page menu memorizing all the drinks is a feat and being able to mix them right off the cuff is a real skill. Hal was exceptional in that even while doing drinks he still had time to hold a conversation and help mentor one of the new employees. I will definitely be going back when I am in Houston.

“Foodie fix in a glass”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

Sophisticated foodie looking for a rare complimentary perspective in a drink? This spot will inspire you to drink less while enjoying more. Masterful creations that rival the nation's best mixologists. Humble enough to get that a similar sensation can also come from choosing one of their uniquely selected beer tap options.

“A Very Fine Manhattan”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

I'm a Bourbon Manhattan drinker of long standing, so when my daughter and SIL suggested I try a Rye Manhattan at the Anvil, I gently raised my eyebrows. Ausgezeichnet! as they say. Outstanding! Of course the Sweet Vermouth is a rarity, not the Tribuno or equivalent from the kitchen cupboard. And the Maraschino cherry is a true Maraschino, not the candy-apple red type from the local supermarket. Try the early afternoon, before the scene heats up, and take your time.

“Classic experience”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

Great drinks, atmosphere, and food make this a very popular lower Westheimer venue. The Manhattan was probably the best I've ever had--better than the Oak Bar at the Plaza, which for a long time had been my at least nostalgic favorite. Great bartenders, cool crowd. Even the cheese plate was special. My only disappointment is that Anvil has only one variety of vodka--perhaps a subtle commentary on the stupid proliferation of flavored instead of crafted drinks.

“Unique bar in the Montrose area”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Anvil is great for trying unique and well crafted cocktails. Their menu changes seasonally but they can mix up almost anything you ask for. We even got Ron Zacapas mojitos just like in Miami. Divine.
This bar is massively different on a Saturday night than it is on a Monday. Saturday get there early if you want a booth, it gets packed! Yes it takes awhile to get a drink, but I like that they spend as much timely each one even if they are busy. That's why you're paying $10 for a cocktail right?
We went Monday and it was chill and empty. Excellent for a more leisurely evening. The company was still good though, and we were more at liberty to try new drinks because we could actually talk to the bar tenders.
Keep in mind the bar tenders think they have the most important job in the world and making a drink for the likes of you is taxing on them and their paperboy hats. They will not make an artillery punch unless it's worth it to make a whole batch, so don't even ask on Sunday or Monday. Sorry.
Overall a fun place to go, if you can put up with the posh factor.
