Kris Bistro has become one of my favorite places to eat in Houston. In addition to the innovative food and friendly staff, they serve an excellent, reasonably priced charcuterie. If you go, make sure at least one person in your group orders it; you won't be disappointed. (See my earlier review for a more complete description of the restaurant.)

This is one of THE places to go in Houston for a bit of adventuresome eating. They produce unusual dishes, The staff in the kitchen and on the floor are students at the Le Notre Cooking School, which gives them a bit of freedom to experiment. We found our waiter to be just excellent: knowledgeable, helpful, instructive and friendly. The food was excellently prepared and presented. My only regret - one which will be rectified when I go back - was that I didn't try the charcuterie plate!

It's worth traveling to this industrial type location off the North Freeway to experience the efforts of soon to be chefs, who staff both the front of the house and the kitchens as the culmination of their lessons at the Le Notre Cooking School. Service is not polished but eager to please. The food is inventive and the students really work to present their cooking in attractive ways. The dining room has windows looking into the kitchens and classes which makes the meal even more interesting. We've enjoyed both lunch and dinner here and recommended it to friends.

Kris Bistro is located within the Le Notre culinary school and waitstaff and chefs are learning how to deal with real restaurant situations.

The menu recently changed (and was expanded) when the season changed. Something that has not changed is what is perhaps the best single appetizer you will find anywhere in Houston...the charcuterie plate. It also has different meats from time to time, but generally includes smoked duck (which is out of this world), 2-year aged serrano ham (also unreal), lamb/goat/pork sausages/salami, and a little compartmentalized plate with various things. We have had marinated artichokes, pickled beets, foie gras, rabbit/black truffle/pistachio terrine, confit tomato (awesome), and mustard (goes well with the meats). DO NOT pass this up--the man who was slicing off the pieces of meat told me that they are working on some venison (they age everything for at least a couple months, so you know what you're getting is high quality). If it wasn't for this appetizer, the rating on the restaurant would have been "average" rather than "very good."

Moving on (and you may not want to after you dig into the meaty goodness of the charcuterie), entrees are pretty good. Osso bucco was large and comes with a spoon for the marrow if that's your thing. It needed a bit more salt/seasoning to make it exceptional, but the "risotto cake" that comes with it was atrocious--saturated and lacking all the flavors that it claims it has in its description. Brussels sprouts that were served with it needed to be trimmed a bit more--rough ends were all over the place and were basically inedible.

The halibut entree with the lentil beurre blanc was good, but possibly could have used a touch of acidity--maybe a splash of white wine to elevate it. Two people ordered the pasta carbonara and both enjoyed their dish...however, I want to make a very important note (which has been pointed out on comment cards which they distribute at the end of the meal) about the lack of vegetarian options on this menu. We had a vegetarian in the group and she literally only had one option to choose from, which was the pasta without the pancetta on it. Luckily, she was fine with it and disaster was avoided, but it would be nice to see an option or two more for future menu upgrades. As an aside, everyone appreciated the numbered wines listed beside each entree for easy pairing purposes.

Service was great--our server had a good personality and provided us with excellent service and recommendations. No complaints in this department.

We didn't get dessert this time around, but we were still given a little collection of mini-desserts to end our meal. A nice touch. There was a little juice given to us at the beginning of the meal that was pretty sour, but tasty. Also a nice touch.

Overall, the charcuterie alone is adequate reason to return here at least occasionally. Prices are pretty high for entrees, which may backfire on them a bit when it comes to increasing clientele. Lunch prices are much more reasonable, but cater to a smaller crowd. We'll be back--if only for the meat!
