I used to live in Houston at One Park Place (the high rise building across Discovery Green), so this is definitely my neighborhood and surely my favorite part of the city. All major highways are easily accessible, and it is no more than 15 minutes from any of the other major areas - midtown, galleria, the heights, memorial, etc.
I was happy when the Embassy Suites was built because downtown was in desperate need of a new hotel with proper hospitality -- especially because the Hilton, despite the nice facilities always lacked in service, and the Hyatt is just too outdated. Valet at the hotel is a bit expensive, but worth it so one doesn't have to bother with finding parking downtown. Breakfast was nicely varied, and the guys that make the omelets and pancakes are a blast! I'm not a morning person, but one just cannot help to get into a good mood with these fellows.
The evening cocktail reception is also a nice place to spend an hour before heading to dinner - recommend The Grove at Discovery Green or Andalucia on San Jacinto. The rooms were spacious and always clean. And the gym and pool were nice, though the gym is a bit lacking in weights and resistance training equipment. Overall, a very enjoyable stay, and the location cannot be beat.More
