Owner description: Bayou Bend is the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's house museum for American decorative arts and paintings. Displayed in the former home of Houston civic leader and philanthropist Ima Hogg (1882-1975), the collection is one of the finest showcases of American furnishings, silver, ceramics, and paintings in the world. The house is situated on 14 acres of organically maintained gardens in Houston's historic River Oaks neighborhood.

Setting, gardens, antique furniture, all strictly in period are top notch. On a lovely day, this is a great place to visit but it does require a medium amount of walking. There is also another plantation home closer to the ocean, near Columbus, Tx that was owned by Ima Hogg. It is also a nice tour.

I visited with my 11 year old son on a Saturday. His ticket was free which made it an affordable venue. They offered a scavenger hunt he enjoyed alot - especially matching the number of chimneys seen outside with the number of fire places inside. This gave me the chance to point out the design differences of each as well as read interesting facts abiut each roomas in the provided guide (which you can also access with your phone as part of the tour).

The grounds are beautiful and I would recommend going when the azaleas bloom in March. The weather is cooler then so you can really linger among the fountains and Italian statues. Crossing the foot bridge over the Bayou felt like stepping into another place and time.

A place of beauty, with art, antiques, history, and lovely grounds. A wonderful gift to the city. I really love visiting during azalea season, my wife prefers Christmas.

Bayou Bend has beautiful gardens and one of the most outstanding collections of American furniture, paintings and decorative objects in the country. It is a calm and peaceful oasis in the midst of Houston. Docent led tours as well as recorded tours are available. Reservations are recommended but not required.

Bayou Bend Collection is just around the corner from my home, but I've never been. We noticed that on July 4, they were open to the public free of charge. We decided to stroll in. We enjoyed the welcome center where you can learn about Ima Hogg and her family who were so benevolent to Houston in many ways. There's a quick historical video to watch and a room with more detailed info and some personal artifacts. The show stopper is the walk across the suspension bridge over Buffalo Bayou onto the grounds of Hoggs' former home now turned museum. So beautiful! The gardens were lovely and serene, and it's easy to imagine the fabulous soirees that were held here. The home is set up to showcase American art and antiques...something I've never known much about. Docents were friendly and knowledgeable. We will return for some of the special events that the museum holds through out the year. I can only imagine how beautiful it is at Christmas.
