There is no permanent collection at this museum, which I find exciting. There was a photography collection and a sculpture type exhibit when I went. If you enjoy contemporary art, then I suggest stopping by. It's across the street from the MFA Houston and is free. I suggest giving a donation. Due to the graphic nature of the art, you might consider leaving your children behind.

Each visit my family and I have made to the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston has been a perception-expanding experience. Our first time there was in 1984 to see Laurie Anderson's exhibit, and we knew we had discovered a very special place. Incredibly, the museum is always free! The current exhibit, "Jane Alexander: Surveys (from the Cape of Good Hope)", delivers it's theme powerfully and memorably.

The icing on the cake is always the gift shop. It is a wonderful source for artful home decor and unique accessories, as well as beautiful books. It has become our "go to" place when we are looking for gifts that are certain to be one-of-a-kind.

Whenever we travel to Houston, we look forward to a trip to the CAM; it's always a treat.

My family & I have been to this museum many times in the past, and it really is hit or miss with the exhibitions. Some of them are really great, while others are a total waste of time. The entrance is free, but the museum is closed on Mondays & Tuesdays and opens at 11am during the rest of the week. When we walked in this time, they were in the middle of setting up an exhibition, but there was another exhibition downstairs that was available for viewing. This particular exhibition was a photography exhibit that had more nudity than we expected. There was an entire room with practically pornography (I wouldn't consider it art), and there was no notice before entering the room. Upon walking in with teenage girls, we had to do an abrupt about-face and lead them out. This didn't deter us, so we continued to browse the other photos. We also decided to check out the gift shop, which we have been in before. The caucasian cashier watched us the entire time and eventually came over to one of our teenage girls and asked for what she had in her hands to hold at the register. Mind you, there were plenty of teenagers in the store, so why she decided to ask the Hispanic one for her items is beyond me. Upon checking out, I advised the woman that I didn't appreciate her insinuation, for which she attempted to make an excuse. Not only will I never visit this museum again, but I would advise that if you are a color other than white, don't waste your time. In a city as diverse as Houston, you would think that these type of issues would have gone to the wayside. I'm extremely disappointed in the Contemporary Arts Museum.

We were there when they were having an event. The staff was top notch. The art pieces were spectacular. It is well worth a visit.

This is really an exhibit space so the collection changes each visit. I am not into it but it is free and almost always a stop because it is not a permananent collection, when going to MFAH across the street and the sculpture garden.
