“The best place to stay for cancer treatment/care at MD Anderson!”
Reviewed May 19, 2012

This convent hotel, with walkways to MD Anderson is not only reasonably priced, but also… the staff and services are part of the caring treatment you will experience at MDA. There is a good restaurant as well as other options for food, they are set up to give you what you require for a comfortable and safe stay and the staff is amazing. You can have your blood work done on site and there is a service desk that can answer your questions and provide other services as well. You get a copy of your appointment information and directions at check in.

Room Tip: Book as early as you are able since this fabulous facility fills up quickly.

We have been coming to Houston and MDA for just over a year. I am in charge of travel arrangements, and for our previous 8+ trips, I was able to secure other accommodations at other hotels around the TMC that were less expensive. This trip, which I planned 6 weeks beforehand, required that we stay here as ALL hotels near the TMC were sold out due to a technology conference at Reliant. The nightly rate for two queens was $121 plus $5 for self park. So, $126 breakfast not included. (For comparison purposes, most medical center rates at other hotels recently increased and, run about $129 per night which includes parking, breakfast and shuttles to the TMC. Prior to the rate increase, nightly rates ran in $109 range.)

Pros: Can't beat location to MDA. Sky bridges connect to Main Bldg and Mays Clinic. Upon checkin, they have patient's scheduled appts printed (and secured for privacy). Common areas are updated and well maintained and include amenities such as complimentary coffee, internet access, printing and entertainment such as pianists, bingo, and the like. Complimentary shuttle that will take you up to 2 miles. Two sinks, one in bathroom and one outside.

Cons: guest rooms could use some updating-they are a good size-but, appear a little dated. The toilet flushing situation is a bit funny. Scary at first, the flush is powerful, but so much so, you kinda feel like you are at risk for getting sucked in too (and yes, you can here other toilets flushing on occasion).

We have stayed at the Rotary House on several occasions and have always been pleased with our stay here. We stayed at several hotels in the area that have the "MDA" rate before we discovered the Rotary House. I know that when you have cancer that expenses can add up but after our stays at other hotels, I gladly pay for the Rotary House! Really, when you factor in the cost of parking, free wireless, your time and the hotel being attached to MDA it can not be beat.
First, having access to the Lab on site is a true blessing. Any one that has to get up and face the mass crowds in the labs will understand that this makes it just alittle bit easier to get that done and behind you. The staff at the hotel is wonderful, they must have special training to work at this Marriottt as they will go out of their way to make sure you are taken care of.
They have alot on site that helps you get through the longer visits. Sitting rooms with sunshine, indoor pool and hot tub, laundry room and computer's that you can use. They also have a patient relations office on site that can help you with maps to navigate the complex that at times can be overwheming. They have books and movies that they loan out as well.
As stated in some of the other reviews the rooms are starting to show their wear, but they are clean and the beds are wonderful. It is quiet which is good for resting between appointments.
I think that you should really consider staying here as everyone there is there for the same reason and the comfort and warmth you will find here is priceless.

Mom & I have spent a total of 3 months at the Jesse H. Jones Rotary House over the last year. Working in collaberation w/ MD Anderson Cancer Center this setup is amazing. Mom had to undergo major surgery & being just a short walk away from her recovery offered great piece of mind. The hotel is connected by sky bridges to the hospital providing unrivaled convenience to the appointments and long days required in the battle. The staff, the cleanliness, the service and compassion of the Marriot employed staff is impressive. A nice break from the stress was unwinding @ "The Oaks". If you are a margarita fan, make sure you ask Esmarelda ("Esmi") the bartender, for the top shelf one. If you are up for a extra special treat ask for the " Eddie Special Top Shelf Margarita", it will hold its own against any margarita in the world. Make sure its Esmi making it though or it won't be the same.

Godspeed in your journey.

A fabulous location when you need to be at MD Anderson. The enclosed skywalk bridges to Mays Clinic and MDA Main Building make it easy to get to where you need to be in any weather. The hotel staff was wonderful. The lobby and common areas are very nice. But the guest rooms, including furniture and bathrooms are dated and could use updating. The pool and fitness center are very nice and provide opportunity for nice recreation break for a caregiver companion. Rates are a bit pricey compared to other options, but the location makes it worth it in many cases. Oaks Restaurant in hotel is convenient but the food is not particularly good, the portions are huge and there are virtually no healthy choices on the menu -- hard to believe for a hotel in hospital setting. Restaurant staff was great, but it seemed to take forever for the food to arrive. Free shuttle service is provided to restaurants, shopping centers and other attractions within 2 miles of the hotel -- a nice touch, but be prepared to wait up to 20-25 minutes for pickup at times. Stayed in a king suite which was nice for our ten day stay. Flat screens in both bed room and living room area. Laundromat area is available for hotel guests. The atmosphere can feel a bit like a nursing home at times, but everyone is here for the same reason so everyone adjusts to it. Like in real estate, it's all about location and nothing tops Rotary House in that respect if you are going to be at MD Anderson.

Room Tip: Kitchenettes have large refrigerators and microwaves but no stovetops.

I've probably stayed here over 10 times, mostly for return visit checkups, but also when I was discharged from the hospital. The advantages are:
1) You're connected by skywalks to the MD Anderson buildings so it's very convenient for keeping your appointments. This also provides a certain feeling of safety for people in fragile health: you know the hospital is just over the skywalks.
2) You can get a suite with kitchenette. Many patients/guests aren't feeling well and one can warm up some sort of favorite comfort food like soup and crackers in your suite and not deal with a restaurant. There's room service too of course.
3) There are many facilities and amenities outside your room not seen in standard hotels:
(i) need a wheelchair? call the front desk and one will be brought up
(ii) there's a little convenience store on site with various food items, including canned soups, fresh fruit etc.
(iii) in addition to the usual bar/restaurant there's a Starbucks, a sandwich bar, and another sort of lunch place.
(iii) in addition to the normal hotel lobby there are three other rooms guests can use, which is ideal if you're staying there a while and don't want to be cooped up in your hotel room. There is a sort of atrium room filled with wicker chairs and couches and potted plants. There is a sort of large living room with plenty of couches and easy chairs and a wide screen TV (usually set at low volume to news). There is a "quiet room", also with couches and chairs, some books, and an aquarium -- people at MD Anderson have a lot on their minds and this is a place to escape and think. There is a patio with some lawn furniture and a fountain off the atrium room, that faces a small park. It's a rather small linear park paralleling busy Holcombe Ave but it's heavily vegetated with green grass, shrubs and ornamental plants and can be a welcome respite.
4) The staff are incredible.
5) There's an office of hospital/guest relations and people there can help you navigate through MD Anderson. It's a large place and first-timers might like a little assistance in figuring it all out.
6) There's an onsite blood-work lab: you can spend 15 mins in the evening getting your blood-work done and then skip the wait and the packed waiting rooms the next day in the clinic buildings.
7) Lastly, no one is there unless they, or a loved one, has cancer. So cancer isn't avoided in casual conversations that you may have with other guests, say if you're hanging out in the "living room". But it's not like everything is a huge downer, most people you meet there have an incredible positive attitude and it can be very helpful to maybe discuss cancer a bit with another guest but then have the conversation move on to other normal topics.
8) The two downsides: (a) unless the place has been refurbished recently some of the guest rooms can seem a bit worn (the public spaces however are bright and clean and comfortable). (b) I thought the restaurant food was pretty bad but obviously that's a very subjective option.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that doesn't face busy Holcombe Avenue
