Description: Leon "Pappy" Selph just may have been the best fiddle player that ever lived. He was the inventor of Texas swing and is best known for having written "The Orange Blossom Special." Back when the Original Goode Company BBQ opened on Kirby Drive, he'd play the first Friday of every month for a flat rate of $65 and a bottle of Jack Daniels. He'd always take the whiskey upfront. And at the end of the evening when Jim handed him the money, the fiddle player would quietly fold it up and stick it in Jim's shirt pocket. He'd tell him, "Jim, things will get better. You just stick with it." It was a kind gesture and good advice. This all left quite an impression on Jim's son, Levi. So it was no surprise, when years later, Levi decided Houston needed a dedicated home for Texas music and created the Armadillo Palace right across the street from the original barbeque place that Pappy played all those years ago.Goode's Armadillo Palace hosts live Texas music several days a week. It serves a full menu of Texas comfort food and is available for parties of just about every size. Levi is no less demanding than his father is, and no place captures the spirit of Texas music the way the Armadillo Palace does.

“Bit spendy for bbq, but vibe and digs are brain/eye candy”
Reviewed July 14, 2014

Okay, a $50 bill for a two person meal is a bit spendy, I admit. And that's without alcohol.

Still, we were looking for local legends to spend our time and dime at, and the Armadillo proved it's merit. Not too crowded for a Friday night either, so that was a bonus.

We ate on the patio, fans and misters keeping us cool and keeping the flies away, which we dined on brisket, sausage, ribs and assorted sides. The jalapeno bread tickled the tastebuds, the meats are well done, and the sides are plentiful and provide the right amount of cooling/cleansing of palates between mouthfuls of meat. We had the potato salad, sweet beans, pinto beans and slaw.

Parking was easy, ordering was easy, paying was easy. Digesting all that meat...not so easy.

“Great Service with Solid Food Choices”
Reviewed June 25, 2014

It is so great to get really good and responsive service from the waiter to the busboys. Food choices excellent and delivered in good time. Lots of good parking and room inside and out for all occasions. Bar scene was hopping with patrons drinking and eating.

“Awesome Armadillo but Disappointing Drinks”
Reviewed May 11, 2014

We stopped in the Armadillo Palace last weekend for a snack and some drinks. The large statue outside was quite awesome looking and interesting. We came in to the bar and were not greeted by any of the staff or offered service for a while which we thought was strange. We had margaritas which the bartender said were awesome. However, they were definitely not. They were watered down and had little taste, very disappointing. We just ordered an appetizer and the chips, queso, guacamole and salsa platter was very good. Too bad the margaritas weren't great, we might have stayed longer.

Thanks for taking the time to send in your review. We value the opinions of our guests and are sorry to hear you did not enjoy our margaritas. We take pride in serving high-quality and tasty food and drinks with friendly service. I can assure you poor service is not up to the Goode Company standard. We hope you will give us another shot and visit again in the future. Thanks again for sending in your review; hearing from customers like you is invaluable.

“On the pricer side but you are helping to pay for the music history!”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

Food is excellent, price is a little high but splurge while you are in the muesum district. You are literally sitting where the greats played. They have charlie daniels fiddle on the wall. The stage willie has played on. But most of all the have a giant mirrior armadillo outside! Great picture place! A piece of austin atmosphere in deal middle of Houston.

“Great Place”

We had a large party for a company Christmas party and the management, waitstaff, and bartenders were very helpful and friendly. The food and drinks were great, as well.
