Crowne Plaza Houston Near Reliant - Medical
Ranked #347 of 517 Hotels in Houston
Reviewed August 28, 2011

My husband was treated for cancer at MD Anderson, so we now have to make a number of trips to Houston (from the Austin area) for checkups. We have stayed at the Crowne Plasa Houston-Medical/Reliant Center about 5 times now. There are two parts to the hotel-the tower and the pool area. We have always stayed in the pool area. The building there is either 2 or 3 stories high, with small balconies overlooking the pool area. Each balcony has 2 chairs and a table. The hotel is right off of 610 & Kirby, but we could not hear any road noise at all. The pool area is surrounded by trees & plants & has a peaceful atmosphere.
This section of the hotel is older, but the rooms are very clean and comfortable - lots of pillows on the beds! The bathrooms are clean & updated. The air conditioners were a little noisey, but didn't affect our sleeping.
The hotel provides a shuttle to the medical center regularly and will also take you to the stores or restaurants, which is a big plus as parking at the medical center is expensive.
The lobby is beautiful and the staff treat you like 1st class guests!
Everyone that stays there receives a free breakfast buffet, complete with made to order omlettes and waffles. Includes coffee and juice, white tablecloths & flowers!
The tower is around $100, but the medical rate for the pool area is $74. They also have a business center, bar & restaurant. It is right down the street from the Reliant Center and lots of shopping & restaurants. We won't stay anywhere else.

When we checked in we were told there was no water. We understood someone had broken a water main and it would be midnight or 1 am before it would be on. That was fine. We get shipped to our room and the elevator does not work and we are on the 2nd floor. The stairwell looks like it has not seen a vacuum cleaner since the 90's and then the rails we were so dirty I was scared to touch them. We entered the hallway to our room and the hallway was filthy as well. Reluctantly went in to our room to find a long list of broken items the desk covered in writing and some of it was profanity and phone numbers for a good time.... The shower curtain bar broken the toliet paper holder broken shower head broken it dripped all night. Television broken. Two beds in the room and one was.... Yep broken!! Trying to complain was pretty much useless because the staff had little to no understanding of English and the ones the did. Were only concerned with the fact that Monday Night Football would happening at Reliant and they would be full. Pool ok but far from great and the Hot Tub was disgusting and you could not see the for the leaves and all the stuff in the bottom and the timer was broken!!

I travel constantly and understand when things like water and even the elevator break. But they are not concerned with anything but the up keep of there lobby. I was extremely disappointed and for this to be a Crowne Plaze blows my mind!!!

Please take my warning and do not stay here!!!

The Kirby Crowne Plaza seemed to be having an identity crisis. With all the renovations it still had the feel of an old Holiday Inn with the old tiles and stained ceiling tiles tossed in with some new granite counter tops and very nice beds. It's not your typical Crowne Plaza but has great proximity to Reliant Stadium. (3 city block walk which is as far as most parking for Reliant). The staff was very nice especially the doorman. The housekeeping was spotty. They missed one day and then missed several points of cleaning. Overall expect Days Inn and you'll be satisfied. Across the highway was Pappacitos, great Tex-Mex where a plate of fajitas can feed an entire family of four.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is away from the highway. Or a pool side room.

Our room had somewhat of a musty smell. Beds were ok. Hotel is dated. Loved the interior decoration (Lobby). Staff seemed friendly. Overall not bad

A hotel can make or break your trip. First the location is great. Right off the highway and within walking distance to the Relient Center. There is a shuttle (apparently-cause not one ever mentioned it to us) that takes you within 5 miles of the hotel. This gets you to the zoo, museum, and hospitals. However...

There is a severe problem with the staff and communication. They do not have a basic understanding from the guest prospective. In hospitality, this is a major concern. Dealing with the Crowne Plaza Houston staff is like dealing with a bunch of teenagers on their fist job.

Check in was slow, 1 staff member with another one popping up randomly then leaving again. The clerk even allowed people walking up to cut in front of those waiting for check in. The second day the desk tried to check us out though we had a second night paid for. I was proactive and got it settled with the manager. To our shock and horror, when we came back to our room after a day sightseeing, we saw another couple leaving the room where we had left our belongings! We had to wait in line for the 1 front desk clerk again and asked where our stuff was. They just took our things and moved them even after we had been assured that we could stay in the room and I stopped by and reconfirmed with the front desk. Like most people, I do not want strangers going through my luggage and toiletries (we threw a lot away). The staff and managment did not seem to grasp this concept nor show any understanding of the situation (like when were they going to inform us?) I was furious at their lack of concern and left a day early, cutting our vacation short and driving all night. Even though my room was paid, I just couldn't stay there after such shoddy treatment. To make matters worse, the manager who assured me I could stay in the room then lied to his boss to cover his butt when he got in trouble for it. Just like a teenager. I bought the hotel from a 3rd party and we got no respect. Note: I did get a refund through the 3rd party, but it did not make up for the trouble, stress, and loss of vacation.

The lobby looks okay, but the hotel is cofigured strangely with low hallways and different smells in each one. The parking lot is sometimes used by event goers from the Relient Center at the expense of paying hotel guests, and the traffic can be a mess. Don't stay here if there is a big event cause you can't negotiate into the hotel lot. The traffic backs up for miles and people walk in front of you making it dangerous to drive. We had room service and its not too awful high, but quality is just so-so. They carry the tray, no cart, so you have to find a place to set it in your room. They allow pets and with a pet show in town, the place was dog central. Rooms were okay and the pool looked nice. Some bad and some good, but nothing can make up for the poor service. They advertise as a 3 star-NoWay! 2 star at best even without the poor staff.

Stay if you must, but be aware of the issues and keep your luggage with you at all times.

Room Tip: The suites have better beds, find a good rate the standard price is too much for the quality

This is not a 5 star hotel, but it IS a very solid 3.5 star hotel just as advertised. My only complaint was that we were not aware of the extra fee for parking until after we had booked the room. Then after paying the parking fee, we would not have known there was no charge for handicap parking if the elevator had not been out of order on our second night. Since my daughter was using a "knee walker" and we were carrying her crutches, you would think the desk clerk would have asked if we had a handicap placard. But all was well since they did credit the $16 parking fee that had been charged.

My family frequently visits and stays in the Houston Medical Center area for medical visits. We use Priceline nearly every time we go and have been VERY successful in getting quality hotels nearby for a reasonable price when we bid on 2 1/2 or 3 star hotels. We were delighted to get the Crowne Plaza which was rated a 3-Star.

We checked in on Sunday July 17, 2011, and were met by friendly and courteous staff. We were referenced to the additional buildings behind the main tower when assigned to our room in Building 2. As referenced in other reviews, there is a main tower plus several 2 or 3 story buildings in the back in a motor inn style configuration. These buildings appear older, especially once you enter them. We were greeted by old dingy, grungy carpet (which continued into the room) and an un-air conditioned elevator and dark hallway. The room had a rundown feel with the carpet and peeling walls. The linens and towels were clean, but the worst was the bed underneath. The hotel lists pillow-top beds as one of their amenities, but we found older mattresses with a pad across the top. We discussed returning to the front desk, but decided to try what we had...Big mistake! That was absolutely my worst night sleep (lack of) ever. I'm not picky and can sleep on most beds, but my wife and I both had a terrible night. Add to this the noisy A/C which was not keeping up and constantly cycling.

At 6:30 the next morning I went to the front desk to report my woes and request a move to the tower. I had only half of the above story out before the clerk was already clicking on the computer to find another room, handing me the keys to a 2nd floor room. I thanked her and wondered if that's an automatic policy for anyone stuck in the back. Entering the room, we did find an upgrade. The beds were pillow-tops and the rooms did appear a little more up to date. Our stay did improve and we were satisfied considering the price we paid.

We have contacted Priceline to recommend a downgrade in the star rating of this hotel.

All of the staff we encountered were helpful and professional.

The ratings I've given below are mixed as we had 2 different rooms. I was in 3 different rooms on the 2nd floor which were adequate, depending on your discount.

The pool is older, but nice. Old style and big (9 feet deep on one end). We did not try the restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for the Tower and make sure your room number begins with 1 (1000's).
