We booked a room here for 2 nights on expedia. We arrived after 6pm and the front desk told us that we didn't have a reservation afterall...after we'd paid in full online. To add to the annoying confusion, there was a language barrier. Ultimately, we were able to straighten out things w/ Expedia and the desk clerk "discovered" that we were in their reservations afterall - after 1 long hour.
Once we got to our room, it was not vacuumed, used glasses on the table, & I pulled the covers back and saw that the sheets had definitely not been changed for what looked like a week - very dirty, with lots of hair (not the kind on our heads). Called the front desk & asked if someone could come in & clean up and give us new sheets and they said they could not but would change us to another room. Well, we had a 7 month old whom we'd just unloaded everything for & it was 2 hours passed his bedtime and there was no way we could move. During the course of my very frustrating, language-barriered conversation with the front desk clerk, my husband was brushing his teeth & about to rinse from the hotel glass when he discovered 2 blue contact lenses floating in the water. So gross, guys. Ultimately, the clerk sent a janitor/maintenence man to our room with sheets and a broom. He was so filthy from the work he does as a janitor (understandably so), that we just grabbed the sheets from him & changed them ourselves. By this time it was 9:30pm . We called Marriot headquarters, told them what happened, and they ended up giving us the night free. However, the next day, the front desk was extremely rude to us when we went to check out.
Maybe a fluke visit, but we'll never return even if it is 1/2 a block from the galleria.

RIGalleria, Manager at Residence Inn Houston by The Galleria, responded to this reviewResponded April 22, 2010

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment about our hotel. We are very sorry for any inconveniences you experienced while staying with us. Please know we have been working very hard to ensure the proper steps have been taken to prevent this from happening again. We have taken the time to retrain our staff on how to handle Expedia reservations and the wait you experienced will not happen in the future. I also understand your concerns with the cleanliness of your hotel room. Rest assured, our housekeeping staff has been completley turned around with the addition of a new manager. I hope that you will consider our hotel again on your next trip to Houston.

Kind regards,
Dana Weiche
Sales Manager

Hotel seems to be a converted apartment or motel, rooms access from an outdoor "breezeway."

My biggest complaint is that the walls seem to be paper thin- all noise transmits from adjoining room(s).

Staff seems pleasant enough, but I can never envision a stiuation where I would return to this property based on the over "feel" of the room (old with cosmetic finishes that have been refreshed) and the noise problems.

I love Residence Inn, but enjoyed this especially. Within walking distance of the Galleria - it was mecca for the teenage girls in our group. The room was large and we had everything we needed. The breakfast was generous - perfect for our athletes, with a good hot meal before they went on to competition.

But the thing that impressed me most was the service. Everyone was friendly and accommodating -- and one employee in particular went out of his way on more than one occasion to take care of our needs. He saw us coming in from the car and suggested a rollaway bed, and then delivered it within minutes. He ran to get towels when alerted that they were out at the hot tub.

This hotel made our trip very enjoyable!

This is a typical Residence Inn. The set up is very similar to other Marriott Residence Inns.

One thing set that this hotel apart is the convenient location. It is set back behind the busy Westheimer in the Galleria Area. A supermaket nearby is wonderfully convenient. One night, when it was raining very hard, I just walked to the supermarket to buy some lettuce and go-to dinner. That saved my evening. The Belt 8 Fwy is about two blocks to the west, and the huge Galleria Mall is several blocks to the east. Plenty of nice restaurants within short driving. Very convenient indeed.

The staff was friendly and preofessional. The free breaksast and early evening snack were good and saved the hassle. There is free internet in the room. The computer with a printer in the lobby is great for checking in airline and print boarding passes.

The tiny table-top TV needs to be upgraded to larger flat screen TV thuogh.

Overall, wonderful place to stay if one needs to stay long-term or have a family there.

When you wake up to find a dead cockroach in your living room, all other pluses and minuses become inconsequential. When you wake up the next morning to find that roach's mate scurrying about looking for his pal, it's all over folks.

We were staying there with two young kids who were all over the floors and one was even in a sleeping bag on the floor (yes, even after the roaches were discovered). You can imagine the kind of chill that puts down a parent's spine.

In general, the room (#1212) was extremely small (my sister's family actually moved to the J.W. Marriott down the street) and quite old and dirty. I can't say whether the room had been cleaned before our arrival, but even if it had, it just looked and felt crusty, dusty, and decrepit. We were fearful to look under couches or inside cupboards!

I told the manager about the roaches and to their credit, they immediately offered to move us to another room. Unfortunately, it was just bad timing as we had plans and couldn't pack up. When I checked out though, I asked what else they could do and they took one night's charge off the bill.

The location is excellent, walking distance to everything in the Galleria including Borders, an amazing indoor and very high-end mall (w/skating rink), several strip malls, and very good restaurants. The pool looked very nice and I did see maintenance guys checking the water daily.

Breakfast was plentiful, but that's about all the good I can say about it. It was mostly white breads, high-carb stuff and unattractive looking fruit and yogurt. They did have make-your-own-waffles, but again, the batter looked watery and sat unrefrigerated.

The hotel did offer free milk, juice, and sodas throughout the day (great for kids). The management and staff were very very friendly and helpful.

The rooms face an inner courtyard area and the parking lot. This design means that you will catch EVERY little noise that occurs with the other guests as they are walking to their rooms, parking their cars, etc. Think of luggage wheels rolling on cement. Think of car alarms. Think of a couple arguing about exactly where the heck their room is located. Or...as in our case...think of a huge wedding party that decides to hang out on the balconies, shout from room to room, and come and go in their cars until the wee hours of the night/morning. Indeed, when I went down to complain in the morning (could not leave sleeping newborn alone in the room to go take care of it at night!), there was vomit all over the elevator floor and other guests were at the desk complaining as well. The design of this building means that you are party to everything that happens outside your bedroom door - something you don't usually get when you're nestled in a larger building. It's really a shame, because the entire visit was ruined by this.
