This is just Houston avoiding its own downtown! What's down there? Walkways and shops!! Why put them underground? Because it's hot? Grow up kids! Of the Houston residents i know, none had ever visited the tunnels. Clearly they are used by the working stiffs who commute into the business and banking high rises downtown and by tourists, but if these people dislike downtown Houston so much that they'd rather avoid them, then i wish they'd just do so. Perhaps there are nice, touristy entrances but all the entrances and exits i managed to find were unmarked staircases in miniskyscrapers. Kinda ridiculous.

Visit with family. Ate at a great Mediterrean restaurant. A lot of walking. But definitely a way t beat the Houston Heat!

Cool respite in the middle of a work day, unless you were working during Allison. But they have better flood doors now. Still there are shops and restaurants down below ground and it beats the heck out of walking in our famous humid, searing heat.

During the business week drop into the Houston Tunnel System downtown. Shops, restaurants, bank vaults what a mix. Take in a part of it or take it for the full adventure. Everything is well marked, you only need to know where you entered. This is the best thing when it is bad weather (hot, cold, rainy) and you want to see something truly unique.

I always take out of town visitors to see the amazing tunnel system under downtown. You can shop, eat, get your teeth fixed and learn to play the piano, without coming up to street level. Walking on the streets above, you'd never suspect that a beehive of urban activity was going on beneath your feet.
