“Fabulous cottage in wonderful setting”
Reviewed May 13, 2018 for a stay in May 2018

I can't rate this cottage enough; the kitchen was very well equipped which suited our group of 'cooks' and the space for the family was perfect as with 2 x lounges and enough bathrooms/toilets we weren't on top of each other. The setting is beautiful and we enjoyed watching the geese fly into the lake and the chickens roam around the yard. Highly recommend!

“Great location, great accomodation”
Reviewed May 1, 2018 for a stay in April 2018

Located on the edge of Exmoor in the Exe Valley, close to Tiverton for all your supplies and is a great size for a large group. The accommodation was clean, the beds were comfy and there was plenty of space to entertain.

The only down side was that whilst there were recycling bins, they were half way up the drive with none within the property; but that's a very minor point as we could always drop it off when we went out for the day.

I would certainly stay here again and recommend it to others.

“Cosy and great for a group”

We spent a November weekend at Duvale Retreat. It was a warm and cosy pair of cottages, despite temperatures below freezing outside. The kitchens were well equipped (including a knife sharpener and a tea strainer). The larger dining room and the larger lounge were particularly useful as places where everyone could gather together. Make sure you get specific directions to the Retreat, as it is difficult to find in the dark among all the other buildings.

“value for money but could do better”

for the money we payed cant complain about the price
having read the previous review which was spot on with the
lack of crockery ,heating charge and tempature. size of twin rooms which I say are more single than twin.
bunk rooms way to small.
bath rooms in need of decoration with paint flaking off ceiling.
mainly due to people not puttimg on the extractor fan whilest showering as it gets steamy.
mastic to bath and tiles edges needs resealing and shower curtain replacing.
its a modern built cottage not a old one as the plaster crack show on several places due to movement of building.
there was a problem with dead flies and cobwebs the spider need to be sacked as there not catching the flies
location. good location for sight seeing 24 miles to minehead a few miles to tiverton bickliegh.and topsham and Exeter al with in a 45 minute drive south or taunton going back up the motorway.
nearest pub is the Exeter inn 0.6 of a mile away you can walk it but youl take your life in your hands as the road is not lit and the locals drive rather quick round bend roads
bampton village is a couple of miles drive away with a good amount of local shops
a good chip shop and the quarry man pub
stayimg at this set of cottages you will need the car unless you stay in
finding the cottages is difficult as theres no post code on any of the web sites
so if you do decide this place is for you the post code for your sat nav is
EX16 9EG this will lead you right into the hart of the cottages
the sign at the entrance is a wooden one and hard to spot in pitch black night the owners leave you alone to enjoy your stay but are on hand should you require them.
ducks and a guinea fowl greet you on way out in the morning and are on hand to clean up ur left over bread etc
we did enjoy are stay but would look for somewhere else where driving isn't a must to get anywhere
wifi signal is weak and at times said it was out of range
mobile phone signal is absent on most net works

“Fairly Averagae”
Reviewed December 7, 2014 for a stay in November 2014

Stayed in the two combined cottages for a weekend with 7 friends. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the cottages, they are clean and tidy and as described, but compared to a number of others I have stayed in, its decidedly average.

If you hire both cottages they are two identical layouts, connected between the lounge of one and the kitchen of the other, but the kitchen in one is far larger. The twin and bunkrooms are tiny - barely enough room to move and get around or between the beds, and no floor space for bags etc.

Kitchens are nice, good ovens etc. Slightly randomly equipped - not enough crockery or cutlery for the number of beds in each cottage, unless you wash everything up as soon as you use it, and not enough glasses even then. They didn't provide any basics like salt and pepper, oil or milk. Most of the utensils provided were ok but some pans were knackered.

Bathrooms were largely ok although one or two could do with a new coat of paint.

Lounges are long and narrow so difficult to be sociable in. If you hire both for a large group or family you'll struggle to accommodate everyone at either end at once. The photos are not recent as there are marks and rips on some of the sofas.

You get charged an extra £70 for fuel for a weekend, which seems extortionate. Especially as we were out walking all day most of the time we were there. On arrival the heating was on full blast at 25 degrees so we had to turn all the radiators off and open the windows to be cool enough to sleep! So we paid for fuel we didn't use or want to use!

The people are very friendly, but we didn't see much of them, which is fine. You are allowed dogs but there is a cat, ducks and geese so they have to be on a lead outside, as well as the owners own dogs, which bark a lot of they hear your dogs moving around.

The local area is very pretty, Tiverton and Bampton are both nice and the Exeter Inn down the road is a great pub.

Not that easy to find - small sign low down, wood with black writing so very hard to read in the dark. The driveway meanders all around the buildings before you find the actual cottages.

Weak and temperamental wi-fi available.

Management Response
Oct 18, 2015
The two houses both have kitchens one kitchen being slightly larger and more a main kitchen, occasionally people do move bits around in between the two kitchens, both of these were checked after this review and found to be satisfactory.Regarding the heating there are two thermostats on the walls so these can be altered to suit your needs.Dogs are not allowed to run outside of the properties on their own,but they may be allowed to run in the fields to the rear of the site.Any issues or problems we do ask to be bought to our attention during your stay,we do tell everyone this on their arrival and we are on site living,so we do try to rectify any issues straight away. The property does get wear and tear over time and we do update and renovate in between lettings.
