My sisters and I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Gulfway Motel. As we went to High Island to go birding, we are really glad we chose the Gulfway for our stay. The Gulfway is an older style motel, but we all felt the pluses far outweighed the minuses. Firstly, no place could have a friendlier staff. Becky, the manager, will bend over backwards to accommodate requests if at all possible. For the month of April, the Motel even has a resident naturalist, Laura. Laura will make sure you know where all the good birding hot spots are located. She is a real font of knowledge and a super nice person. Secondly, the location is unbeatable. It is only a 5 minute walk to Boy Scout Woods and is pretty much half way between all the birding locations in either direction. The rooms are larger than those in more modern motels and are equipped with modern TVs and small refrigerators. Since we had stopped off for groceries on the way down [there is a market in Winnie just as you get off I10], this was very convenient. The rooms were very clean, although the tub was stained. Be forewarned that aside from small bars of soap, there are no toiletries provided, so make sure to bring shampoo, etc. If you forget, you can always go next door and pick up whatever you need at the Exxon Station convenience store. There was no hair dryer in the rooms either. On days the Grill is not open [for us that was weekdays] Becky provides a very nice continental style breakfast – cereals, instant oatmeal, bagels with a toaster available, hard boiled eggs, fruit salad, sometimes baked goods, and coffee, tea, milk and juice. We also very much enjoyed the reasonably priced hot breakfasts at the Grill on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a bit slow, but everything was well prepared and since all the guests were so friendly we ended up talking to the folks at the other tables. Sack lunches are available for purchase [I think they were $7.50] and if you are staying at the Motel, you can also get dinner there. I believe these were around $15. We decided to eat out. Our favorite place was Stingaree, a seafood place towards Galveston. We ate upstairs on a weeknight and since it was too packed to get in again on Saturday night, we had very good fish tacos in Stingaree’s downstairs bar area. We also enjoyed the BBQ at Tony’s in Winnie [a chain I believe]. The brisket was plentiful, very lean and there was a good selection of sides to choose from. Our only not so great meal was at Al T’s in Winnie. I definitely would stay at the Gulfway again on any High Island trip.
