“Mochi Kitchen Sold”
Reviewed June 27, 2010

My family and I, are so saddened by our recent return to our favorite restaurant. Mochi has new owners, chef, and menu, unfortunatly none of it was for the good. We realized right away that things were different when we saw no familliar faces at the sushi counter. We ordered our old favorites from the new menus, but the formerly fantastic flavor and quality of those dishes was nowhere to be found. All I can say is if you loved it like we did, do not waste your money or your time it is not the same, not even close.

“This place is a must try that will turn into a family favorite!”

Gonnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggg! The sound that you hear when you walk into Mochi Kitchen will catch you by surprise, but it is a perfect beginning to the experience that the people and food will take you through. Ped, the owner and head chef of Mochi Kitchen, is a product of the Reata restaurant, being the executive chef in Los Angeles and sous chef at the Reata in Sundance Square. The walls are covered with illustrations done by customers in chalk and Ped will be happy to share a drink with you at the sushi bar if you bring one along, considering the restaurant is under the new BYOB premise.

While Mochi Kitchen offers up many dishes normally seen on any Chinese Take-Out menu (ie. orange chicken and teriyaki bowls), Ped's creations make what usually shows up at your front door look like amateurish attempts at such basic dishes. The big winner at Mochi Kitchen is the sushi rolls that are not only extremely affordable, but also pack a tasty punch. My friends and I have tried each of the rolls, and we argue about what the best one is each time we go. What we have come to an agreement on are that the top 3 rolls include the Volcano Roll (a basic California Roll topped with baked crab, scallops, and a delectable cream sauce), the Rainbow Roll (the freshest of fish atop a California roll), and the Crispy Sunset Roll (crispy tuna, yellow tail, salmon, and asparagus). If you want to try a variety of the fresh sea creatures, they offer a sushi dinner where Ped will serve you what he feels is the best fish he has on hand. Coming from a guy who was an executive chef in Los Angeles, I think I will always take his opinion.
