“Fun but can get really expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2011

GWL is a pretty neat place, but it will be more enjoyable for the younger than 10 crowd than for your 10-15 year olds. There are plenty of water slides and pools, but only one of the pools is deeper than 3 1/2 feet, so your older kids will be forced to spend a lot of time with the pre-k crowd, which can be underwhelming for them.

There are a lot of 2-8 year olds running around (yes, running, not walking) because of the games that they have, so bring your patience with you.

The food is pretty expensive, and outside of the restaurant in the the 3rd floor, is not very good. I recommend that you bring lots of snacks and drinks (they have a refrigerator in the room).

Dont get me wrong. This is a fun place, but its better to go into it with your eyes open...

The water park was a lot of fun until my 4 year old fell in the kiddie area and hit her chin on a slide. We were told the most they could do was give us a band aid. They gave us directions to an emergency clinic. She had to get three stitches and could not go back in the water. No call to our room to check on her and no offer of free activities that she could do outside of the water park.
I've been to other water parks that had kiddie areas that are much safer, with padded landing areas. Many of the things in this one were made out of concrete. Including the slide my daughter hit her chin on.
The bed was very uncomfortable considering the high price of a one night stay.

The beds were very uncomfortable. For the price I would expect better beds.

I have several reasons to love and hate this place. I love it because my kids think it's our new summer tradition and when they talk about it to friends it's like they own the place. The room key wristband / food, Starbucks and beer token is oh, so convenient and the water park is actually really fun for all ages. We've been twice now and still haven't done all the slides. The lifeguards are professional, there is plenty of non-water activity, feels homey and welcoming because of the polite and concerned staff. But all that for such a steep price tag is hard to swallow, especially if you don't get a special rate. The beds need improvement - the sofa bed is just a joke. The buffet and all the extra games etc. are quite expensive, which doesn't make sense when you pay so much for the room in the first place. The comp towels are plentiful but tiny, bring bigger ones from home for the outside chairs which get super hot in the sun. We were unlucky enough to be there for the 4am fire alarm this week, boy that was fun! My kids were exhausted the next day and we couldn't really enjoy the water park so we just left early. Overall though, a fun experience and we will be back.

Room Tip: The loft rooms on the top floor are super quiet at night, and have better wi-fi reception. Top floor...

We took our grandson and his friend for a 2 day stay. The room was adequate, but had a strange odor. The food was institutional. The arcade is a trap for young ones to overspend. We should have monitored this more closely.
The water park became tiresome after one day; very limited activity. The cost is high and lacks value.

My wife and 11 year old daughter stayed here last week for three nights. We had a great time and highly recommend it. Other reviews mention the expense, but it is a specialty vacation site and we felt wen got good value. The best thing are the room fridges. We brought our breakfast food and food for lunch. We ate off site for supper each night with family and friends in the area. We did eat some pool side burgers one day. They were fine and the expense was offset by the convenience of getting right back to the fun. The indoor water attractions are wonderful and it was nice to not worry about sunburns. We wore water shoes and I recommend them. One tip: the restrooms by the park have showers (with curtained off areas) and they have swimsuit spinners so you can put dryer swimsuits in your bags if you are driving away that afternoon.

We stayed here for 2 nights with a 21 month old and a 4yr old. Overall this is a kid haven! No issue's with check in, our room was ready within the hour of us checking in, which was great. We stayed in a King Luxury and it was very spacious. We did bring our pack n play for the baby, but I ready in the hotel book they will provide one if you need it, so we really didn't need to bring one.

Indoor area is nice, lots of things for kids to do, however it is muggy. No fault of great wolf, we just preferred being at the outside pool and soaking up some sun and fun. I'm sure if it would have rained, we would have been so happy to have that indoor area.

Outdoor pool is ok, most of the pool is shallow, like 2 feet. So the kids could play without any flotation device. I will say my only complaint is the lifeguards are not all on the same page!!!! The first day my kids had brought some pool toys (boat, etc) and played with it most of the day, then when the lifeguard changed we were told "no toys". Wow, try telling a toddler who had played with it all day that I have to pack it away, not so fun. Same thing with the floaties, we had them on the girls all day and lifeguard change came and we were told "no floaties". We talked to a manager about the floaties, b/c I feel safer with them wearing them than nothing at all, as the baby did not want to put on the life jacket. No biggie, manager explained flotation devices had to be approved and floaties were not. This didn't ruin our vacation, but know before you go that one life guard might let you do something and then at shift change another will tell you that you can't.

Also I read where someone couldn't bring snacks to the pool that they had brought, but we did everyday. We didn't eat them in the pool but rather at a table by the pool, so pack some snacks. Nice touch from resort is at 3pm everyday they bring you freezer pop Popsicle for free, my kids loved this!

As mentioned, things are not cheap, but your on vacation, nothing is ever cheap! Cokes - $5, Smoothies - $6, Beer - $5, Chicken strip w/ fries - $8.......You have a fridge in the room and we packed ceral/milk and sandwich stuff for lunch, so we only ate out at dinner. Tons of restaurants nearby so if you can leave resort you can get a great meal (fyi, most give you something free like appetizer etc if you are staying at great wolf, so look at the hotel book). The paw pass is worth it if you have a child over 5. The main discount is the magiquest game/wand, my 4 year old could have cared less about that, she only played with it for about 5 min. The main things she liked were the build a bear, glitter tattoo, and ice cream....the other stuff she could have done without.

Overall, nice place, just what I had expected. Staff was great, most went out of their way for the kids, life guards (some not all) were not as accommodating (but it's safety), and could use some lessons in people skills (felt as if some of them were trying to throw their weight around, like I said no so do it now). Kids had a great time and that is what the vacation is about. We usually do all inclusive resorts but was looking for something a bit cheaper this year. You can keep the cost down but you will have to do a little work like eating in room and packing your groceries.

This theme-based hotel is great for children but don't expect too much when you see the rooms. We stayed in a theme room "Wolf's Den," which underwhelmed, overall. The cave area for the kids was cute, albeit small, but the beds are extremely uncomfortable as was the queen bed for adults. At about $400 a night for our "resort" room, we expected more comfort.

The employees we met were all pleasant and helpful, even though the hotel was packed. So that was nice. As for eating in the restaurants, the same applied. We had good experiences there. But be prepared to pay quite a bit when eating out. It's similar to Disney prices. We saw a lot of folks bringing coolers with food into their rooms, but we weren't as prepared for that. If we ever return, which I hope we don't, we'll be ready for the cost.

Having said all that, the kids were in heaven. They loved the water park areas, water slides and really enjoyed the MagiQuest. It cost $60 per child for paw passes, which gave them a wide variety of things to do, and we'd recommend. Probably the best money we spent. So they enjoyed the experience. Wish it had been better for us parents.....
