“Wonderful Conference Resort in Texas”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

I went to a Vistage Think Big Conference in Dallas and was really very impressed with the resort. We were a group of 1000 and they made you feel very welcome and at home. The staff really goes out of their way to help you, find your way around this large property the rooms are very clean and very nicely furnished. and and the indoor atrium really gives you the feeling you are outside. The outdoor spaces are beautiful and they host several small sitting areas with small fire pits at night where small groups can sit outside and visit. NICE TOUCH!

Now for the food. We had lunch at the Catina one of the best dishes was the "Redfish" prepared beautifully and delicious and the steakhouse has a very impressive wine and cheese cart service. I have been to a lot of meetings but the break outs were done so creatively. One day it was a candy bar, one day popcorn stations with all sorts of popcorn machines and carmel corn stations, one day cookies and baked goods, with a great display. Really well done! I would definitely go back

Room Tip: I stayed in the rear tower and liked it a lot near the convention center and outdoor areas.

There are a lot of nice things to say about this resort, which is why I am rating it as high as I am. In particular, there are amenities galore and I was struck by how impeccably clean it is. But it's like a theme park. For example, there is a mini fake Riverwalk and a fake longhorn steer. Honestly, if you want the Texas experience then go experience the real Texas, not a sanitized facsimile. This place is just not my cup of tea.

Sure is big, sure is expensive, sure is average. I reserved 3 rooms (2 connecting because of one year old) well in advance to celebrate my 60th birthday with family. To start with, I told the parking valet attendant I wanted to self park and he says, "Did you see how far it is to the parking garage?" Well, it is my birthday so I agreed to pay the $27 ($10 extra) and turned over my keys. Next, our atrium view room ($219) was on the 3rd floor with obstructed view so we opted to wait about an hour for a promised phone call from the front desk clerk which we never received. Turns out it was the end of his shift so we took an outside facing room ($179) with a nice view of Lake Grapevine. If the wind is out of the north be prepared for serious jet noise. The rooms are nothing special. Our bathroom lavatories did not have hot water and we were told after two attempts by engineering there was nothing wrong. Beds are just so so. Margarita at the Riverwalk Cantina was pretty good. Dinner Friday night at the Italian restaurant, Zeppole, was excellent. The Bellini was the best I've had. Huevos Rancheros the next morning at the Riverwalk Cantina was very good. Now this gets really good. Our kids and grand kids were arriving around 1 pm for a family day of celebration. I requested from the beginning early check-in for them with connecting rooms close to ours. This became difficult to say the least. One room ready, one not, keys available, keys not. Bottom line, we had four encounters with front desk personnel, each different shifts. Two of the four were very helpful and nice. Two of the four were having a bad day and took it out on me. Original dinner reservation at Old Hickory steakhouse was lost. Good think I called early to confirm because they were busy. Steakhouse service was excellent. Crabcakes average. I had the Texan special, filet and lobster. Couldn't even see the lobster on my plate. steak was dry and a bit over cooked. ($80) Better filet yesterday for $10 at local steakhouse. Lighting in the atrium at night is not very good. Too dark for us. Slamming doors all night long from a frat party kept us awake all night. Checked my bill I saw I was charged for the original atrium view. Leaving the hotel was painless accept for the $1500 tab.
Come on people! This could be an fantastic venue but you've got a long ways to go.

Room Tip: Higher floors with view of Lake Grapevine are nice.

Except for the fact that you need a map (or a friendly staff face!) to find your way around, this is a great place! Okay, to be fair, you only need a map for a day or two. Then, you realize that you're in a small town...where everybody knows your name and they are definitely glad you came! Around every corner is a restaurant or bar/pub, you can carry your drinks around. If you can't get up the energy to get to the Crystal Cactus (ooh, a whole 300 yards away!) the shuttle will ferry you back and forth. Did I mention they have a great range of restaurants, too? And when you get up, you can check out "Lowdown, TX"...a tiny city with two railroads that are humming the day away!
The only bad part? Don't ever check in if they have agreed to a Fraternity weekend. Your sleep will not be a part of your stay. They make up with it with great food, robust coffee, and manners that would make Emily Post proud.
Beds are comfy, the showers could use a bit of help, but overall, you won't go wrong here. And there is a shuttle to nearby places, hint, hint..Bass Pro Shop! Overall, a can't miss place. Bummed b/c the waterpark with with zip-line that ends in the pool wasn't open yet!

Room Tip: You really don't want an atrium room...or on the same floor/wing as Fraternity Boys...!!!

The Gaylord is beyond large-a staggeringly huge resort. It is good for a business meeting, I suppose, because people do not need to leave the property. The rooms are large and generic- they are like those in a mid-range casino. Service is friendly and attentive, notably so. The meals were good, not great, and once you are on the property you will spend a fair amount of money($20 for delivery of a Fed Ex package to my room-it cost almost as much to transport the package 5 floors as it did to ship it across the country).

As I said, it is a fine place for a large conference, but it is not a place I would otherwise select.

I have attended a number of business meetings here. The staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is pure Gaylord biodome, with plantings and interesting water features. The food is acceptable, not terribly special with the exception of the most expensive steakhouse. This would not be my choice for a vacation, but that is a personal comment. As others have pointed out, it is in the middle of nowhere though there are a number of transportation options available.

The hotel is like a city unto itself. Nice clean comfortable rooms. Unfortunately, my floor was quite noisy. Otherwise, no real complaints. There HAS been a change in the demeanor and friendliness of the hotel personnel, however, since Marriott took it over. The flowers and decor of the lobby changes with the season. This is my fourth trip to the Gaylord Texanand it's nice to return.
