“Great place for business and pleasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2012

Great place to have fun and relax while you do business. My wife and stayed here during one week and while I was doing business she was relaxing and recharging her batteries. Very nice restaurants, walkways, waterways, bridges, and gardens. In addition, it's close to the attractions of Forth Worth and Dallas.

The restaurants, walkways, waterways, and bridges make the environment romantic, but it's also a fun space for kids to explore. This makes a great headquarters for a getaway, since it's a very short drive from Grapevine to Fort Worth and Dallas. The rooms are due for an update, especially since the rates are quite high.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the large atrium cost more, but they offer a much more spectacular view.

We stayed here for a week in June of 2012 as part of a business trip. This resort has it all - great rooms, several nice restaurants, gift shops and great pools. We ate almost exclusively at the resort and were never disappointed. Staff was typical Texas hospitality - friendly and engaging. Internet was blazing fast.

Room Tip: Rooms on the outside (away from the atrium) are quieter.

The good:

It's relatively close to the attractions of Dallas and Forth Worth
Downtown Grapevine is a real town and quite pleasant
A decent selection of places to dine within the resort: Italian (Zeppole is a winner), steak house, sports bar & Tex-Mex
A pleasant wine bar above the steak house
The sommeliers in each reaturant are knowledgeable
The disco, Glass Cactus can be good fun
Very friendly staff
I understand Marriott is taking over management of The Gaylord so some of the following may improve

The not so good:

The rooms are dated looking & need an upgrade
Corridors are very dreary (I know that may not be important)
Be sure to ask for a room that does not have an inner ajoining door
The knowledge at the concierge desk is very minimal. They can print Google directions and look stuff up on the internet but are certainly not street saavy
It has hard to walk anywhere outside the resort. Sidewalks are minimal.
There are very few places to actually sit within the atrium
If you are not a fan of country music and loud overhead planes avoid the outside pool
Some prices are a bit steep

Room Tip: Atrium view, upper floor

If you are a business person and attend trade conferences, you have likely spent time at a Gaylord property. The joke about the Gaylords is they are like self contained biospheres that you're stuck in. Granted, they're nice places to be stuck at and the Texan is no exception. I found this visit to be efficient for check in. They had 5 or 6 desk clerks to assist for check in. Because these properties are so spread out, a map is provided and you'l need it for the first couple of days. The rooms are large. My double bed room contained a desk with 2 desk chairs but no soft, easy chairs which made it uncomfortable to watch the football game I was viewing.Amazingly, the only drawer space was the 3 drawer night stand between the beds. However, there is a large closet near the entrance door with plenty of hangers. Gaylords use to supply many bath amentities like mouth wash and shower gel. Now it's a mediocore shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. Also, for my 3 night stay, these were not replenished as is customary at hotels. The water saver shower head was bad with just enough water pressure to wash off the soap. Commode and tub/shower was separated from the double sink vanity by a door. While the $15 daily "resort fee" included a paper they are not delivered to the door, you'll find them at the baggage stand. There's about 6 restaurants on the property including the massive sports bar. I was surprised that lunch at any of the waiter-served restaurants had a 45 minute wait. Unacceptable for tight schedules. Gaylords need to be better prepared to quickly serve.Had dinner at the Old Hickory steak restaurant (underwhelming, overpriced) and the italian cusines restaurant, Zappolte (menu was lacking, food was fine). Hotel staff is cheery and helpful.Lousy beer selections. Very well maintained. Good fitness room with more than20 cardio machines, barbells, dumbbells, weight machines. As mentioned, there is nothing around within walking distance. As biosphere's go, this one is comfortable but you're itching to get "off campus" after 2 days in it.

Room Tip: If you are attending a show at the conference center, I like the "Riverwalk" section. It...

Made a visit here with our granddaughters, and this place was amazingly beautiful So much to see for all of us with the age range from two to late fifties! The decorations and displays were done well, and there were interactive fun things for the children. A nice way to spend a few hours enjoying the holiday magic.

To the uninitiated traveler who has fond memories of those Holiday Inn "Holidomes" of yesteryear, this place will be a modernized dream come true, with its domed Disney-esque facades and water features.

But to those of us who travel for work (and attend the periodic conference at such places) this is an outrageously priced ripoff, with bad food, awful showers (water pressure, anyone?) and noisy rooms. I'm surprised there isn't a "conversation fee" to speak with the front desk.

I think the only time I would choose to stay here is during a zombie apocalypse, because of the plethora of hiding places. Otherwise, skip it.
