Grapevine Vintage Railroad

Attraction details
Owner description: The Grapevine Vintage Railroad travels along the historic Cotton Belt Route between Grapevine and the Fort Worth Stockyards. The Railroad is serviced by two vintage locomotives which include "Puffy" the 1896 Steam locomotive and oldest continously operating steam engine in the South, and a 1953 GP-7 diesel locomotive. Passengers enjoy riding in authentic 1920s and 1930s Victorian - style coaches as they take a step back in time and experience train travel as it was in the glory days of the expanding West. Pull into the Fort Worth Stockyards Station and you'll be right in the middle of the Stockyards National Historic District where the Old West comes alive. Have fun at this outstanding retail and entertainment district.

We planned a train ride trip to the Stock Yards while we had visiting out-of-towners and though we live here, had never done the train ride. We arrived at the station about 40 minutes ahead of departure time and had no problem getting tickets (coach class/open air). The train boarded about ten minutes later. We were enjoying the 1.5 hour ride, and the 87* breeze with soft drinks/snacks from the train snack bar when we came to a stop. We were soon told that there was a crossing train that was stopped for some type of radio problem and that we would await updates. Long story made short....the train in trouble did not move so we eventually (about an hour later) had to reverse and head back to Grapevine since there was no way through. It was a hot wait but I must say that the Railroad employees did everything right in dealing with the situation. They continuously updated passengers about what was going on ahead and what our options were. They gave out bottles of water to everyone waiting in the heat. They asked the entire group of passengers for their input about waiting longer or turning back (we actually voted!) and then they entertained us with time-passer trivia en route. On top of all this, they refunded everyone for the day. I also heard a manger on the phone trying to arrange for rides to get awaiting passengers at the Stockyards back to Grapevine. I am sure they lost money and this was not their favorite day on the tracks. It did not go as planned for us either, but I give them this rating for being honest and communicative and having integrity. Now...if they could just give lessons to the airlines!

Took my fiancé and two boys ages 8 & 11. We sincerely enjoyed the train ride. We bought the open air tickets on a 100 degree day and were not hot or overheated. There are waitresses to bring you cold drinks or hot food. The train robbery was awesome. Even the layover in the stockyards was terrific. Lots to do! We will absolutely do this again. Would even be a good date! Cant wait for the Halloween ride and Christmas trip this winter.

I was really looking forward to this ride with my wife and 3 year old son. Unfortunately i ended up feeling a bit disappointed with the experience.

I would definetly recommend paying the extra for 1st class in summer as the train does not move fast so i would hate to imagine how hot it was in the open air cabins. Certainly get there on time as the train leaves at 1pm and we saw some unfortunate souls who arrived late and therefore missed the ride. Also, i would recommend booking online in advance. The train was sold out.

The main areas of my disappointment are that there is not much to see on the journey and the train now has to move so slow (i overheard some people being told that the train is no longer allowed to exceed 30 mph) that we only arrived at the Stock Yards at 3.50. We had to reboard at 4.05 for a 4.15 departure so there is little time to do much of anything at the Stock Yards.

The return journey was slightly faster and we arrived back at Grapevine at 5.30. I think if more time was available at the Stock Yards it would be a better experience.

The train robbery was epic. Instead of taking money we received money like coupons. The ending was awesome... the sheriff ends his act in the woods by grabbing a small branch and hiding behind it.. I did not capture it by camera, but it was overly funny!

It was a little rough and trained was tipsy but over al good ride on full size train. Would like to have more scenic ride with great views instead of the city area in the distant.
