Reviewed October 26, 2012

My wife and I stayed here in October of 2012 for our honeymoon. This was the downside of our week. The pictures from outside were amazing, and it was instantly obvious that all the money goes to the outside of the resort. It was way overpriced for what you get. This is the first hotel I've ever stayed in that does not have a small refrigerator, so if you like to wake up to a cold energy drink, juice, or water, then prepare to make a lot of trips to the ice machine. My wife also noticed it's the only place she's ever stayed without a hair dryer. The resort isn't aware that everybody has phones or computers that need to be charged, and therefore finding an outlet to charge these things is quite the task, and you will have to choose which lamp to unplug once you find an outlet. The towels are like drying off with a rough carpet. We tried the Cafe inside for breakfast and for $40, after waiting about 30 minutes after ordering, we recieved our waffle and eggs that aren't even Mcdonald's quality (needless to say we didn't try any other meals there). The room is about 20 years past the point it needs renovation. I will say the staff is nice, the landscape is great, and the pool bar was very nice (though at $10 a drink it's also empty, go two blocks and drink for much cheaper). There is also a $300 charge to your bank account on top of what you pay for your room "just in case you charge something to the room" so be ready to have that money tied up and unavailable to you for your vacation, and returned AFTER your vacation. The tv picture looks like they sliced the cable about 50 times too much, but if you want to rent a movie with that kind of quality then it's only a mere $16 a movie. Great city to visit, nice beaches, but please stay somewhere else.

Congratulations on your wedding and we're thankful you chose to stay with us. We are glad to provide our guests with a mini-fridge, you'll just need to ask Housekeeping. We also do provide hair dryers in each of our rooms- in the basket just below the sink. We provide 4 bath towels in each Guest room and replace worn out towels on a daily basis. We do place a hold on debit cards, to ensure the entire room bill can be covered; we do not place a hold on reservations secured with a credit card. If I can be of further assistance, please email ehimes@ldry.com

The best hotel on the Island! It is so worth the price!
Stay in Club 10...great for those special times, like an Anniversary! Pool is just wonderful and the spa is fabulous...very clean hotel, and a very professional staff. You cannot beat the view! Stay on a high floor. This is my favorite place to get away from it all! Love it!

Room Tip: Stay on a high floor, Great view!

First time at this hotel and we were most impress with the efficiency, courtesy and attention of the staff. Room was very comfortable and neatly maintained. We have stayed in many hotels throughout the USA and abroad and the service and organization of this hotel will stand with the best.

The San Luis is a beautiful property. However, it is really showing it's age. Great staff tries to make up for shortcomings and almost does. The air conditioner could not cool our room. The staff was the best anywhere and did immediatly try to help us with our air issue and brought us a box fax which helped.

Great food, though expensive. Mini refrig and microwave available , but no cart to put them on. Had to use up all desk space.

We asked for a handicap access room and the only access it provided that I could tell was three handicap bars in bath. No other handicap features that are usual in hotels, such as handicap toilet and spray shower.

We came for our anniversary and in spite of everything had a great time. Great view - great staff- great food.

Room Tip: Don't get handicap and don't get too high will be too hot

The San Luis is the place to stay in Galveston. The rooms are nice sized and all have a good sized balconies with chairs, and magnificent views of the water. That being said, for the price, the rooms are a bit tired. The water handle for the shower fell off in my hand when I turned the water on (I just popped it back on!), the rug and tile don't quite meet so there is a gap of groutless coverage (not a huge deal), but my worst room complaint was the bed. It was really, really soft (seemed old to me) and the blanket had worn little spots. I expect better bedding in a place of this standard.

The pool is beautiful, but it could be a bit cleaner. Bar service is very sketchy. I was with a group of 11, and most of us had to wait a long time for service, whether we were sitting at the swim up bar OR if we were on the very nice lounge chairs. Two different people had specialty drinks that had to be sent back because they were just awful. One bartender said she was "four days new", so we gave her a break. Beware...drinks are expensive, but you pay for the view.

Also, upon check in, you are presented with a very long list of "Rules". You have to initial each rule, stating that you understand you will be charged for various things if you don't behave well. Return your pool bands, don't steal the towels, etc. Really? Kind of made a bad first impression upon check in. Maybe they have been ripped off by college crowds in the past or something, but it was pretty tasteless.

We ate at the pool restaurant, and the food was good. Ordered room service for breakfast. Very good, hot, and on time. Had a follow up call from the food manager to make sure everything was good. That was a nice touch.

I would go back and stay, just hope a few things get fixed!

The San Luis is a very nice property, but is beginning to show it's age. Rooms were just "ok". Had king bed and the mattress was worn out.
Thought the pool was supposed to be heated, but it was ice cold when we were there the second week of October. Music is way too loud out on pool deck and their choice of music is not what I would think a place like this would play. Very loud and several songs had language that I did not think was appropriate for this setting. Evidently the young pool area employees choose the music we must endure if out there.
Stayed on 12th floor and A/C had problems keeping room cool during daytime. I am glad the outside temp was not higher than mid 80s. At least room would cool off after sun went down and before we went to bed.
All employees were very friendly and very helpful. I think I was acknowledged by every employee I met while walking through the hotel. That is very good sign.
This is very nice property and grounds are well maintained and very pretty.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are great if you can get one. They have larger bathrooms.

Thank you for your review. We do have a heated pool; however with the outside temperature still exceeding 90 degrees most days, we have not turned the heater on yet. We are addressing your feedback about the music choice immediately to ensure it reflects a more family-friendly environment. We hope you will stay with us when you return to Galveston. This was a good experience from when we pulled up. The valet kindly informed us of the self parking option saving us $18/day. All the employees were very nice, from the maid you pass in the hall to the front desk and pool wait staff. It is clear the pool areas where they've really spent some money, and it shows. It really felt like a Vegas style pool with full service drinks & menus along with cushy pool loungers. And wait for it - not one umbrella! In the adults only area there was shaded cover but none for the mass population. They were also playing very loud music (this did not bother us) that was not radio edited (did bother us) including such wholesome one liners from Kanye West, Lil' Wayne, etc. You have a kids club, kids slide & kids menus but no shade & r rated loud music. It doesn't make sense. The rooms are in sad shape & need some serious renovation, but as this was our 1st time to Galveston this may be the standard.

Room Tip: Rooms higher up will diminish the pool music a bit. All rooms face the beach, which is an easy walk...
