“Nice clean place to stay”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

We stayed three nights - 5/20-5/22 and had a great time. The place was very clean. If you are looking for a high end hotel you can certainly find one in Galveston and pay a lot more, but we were very satisifed. The condo has a tiny but adequate kitchen, living room with TV, bath, bedroom, and 2 bunk beds for kids. I think the couch is a pull out bed, too. It was just the two of us so we had plenty of space. We were fortunate to get a spot on the 3rd floor and at the back so it was very quiet. However, we went before kids were out of school so I'm sure it's noisier during the summer. This does seem to be a family-oriented place, too and it seems by the setup to cater to families. The only complaint I had was the bed. It was somewhat hard, and was shoved up against the wall on the side where I slept. Even though it was queen-size, it was moderately uncomfortable. The staff were polite and helpful. You can see the gulf from your balcony, which was nice. The location of the hotel is good too since you can walk across the street to the beach, or drive to the restaurants, the Strand, etc.

Room Tip: Ask for 3rd floor room, if you don't mind the stairs (there's an elevator too). This will he...

We stayed four nights here and the room was very nice. There is a small kitchen where we ate most of our meals. The view from the balcony was nice, but we did have one of the rooms in the front of the hotel closer to the beach. Everything worked, the room was clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. The only problem we had was the room above us. This hotel is partially privately owned and they must have been doing some sort of renovation on that room. One night there was stomping, non-stop from five PM until we had to call the front desk at eleven PM to ask them to stop. They stated that it was privately owned and would send the security guard. The noise did stop that night, but we had continual periodic bangs and clunking around throughout the stay, but never late again. Obviously the beach is right across the street. It is down somewhat from the bars and restaurants on 25th so you are slightly away from most of the crowds. We would stay here again.

This hotel is not worth being #9 in Galveston. The whole place needs an upgrade, the pools are very small & surrounded by gas stations & other hotels. Right outside your bedroom window is the brightest light ever that stays on all night! We had to use tape and tape the curtains closed so we could sleep. I wouldn't consider this a condo, maybe a hotel room with a kitchenette. It is right across from the beach, but at a very busy intersection.

This is our 4th visit to Casa del Mar from the UK and we were delighted to see the upgrades since our last visit. There is now a flat screen TV in the bedroom lounge area so getting rid of the large TV stand has created a larger living space. The gardens have had more planting and are carefully tended by the gardening team. The pools are really clean and the water quality regularly tested. More tables around the pools are more evidence of the spending that the management have in place to improve this facility. It's an ideal location and although not spacious, it really good value for money. All the staff are very polite and welcoming at all times. I cannot fault this facility and highly recommend you stay here. The manager and her staff will not disappoint you.

Room Tip: I suggest that you ask for a high floor, you pay extra for a room with a front view of the gulf and...

I had a weekend birthday party for my daughter and a four of her friends. Helping me chaperone the girls was one other adult and my 17 year old daughter. Total there was 7 of us. I was skeptical about this room because of the low price but had spent a lot of time reading the reviews, which most were pretty good. I have to say I was very pleased and will definitely be renting again in the future.

If this hotel is really the 10th highest rated in Galveston, I would hate to think what number 11 is like! It has a few redeeming qualities, but this hotel is certainly not worth the $190+ rate.

SERVICE: The staff were generally very friendly, however when I booked our room (two months in advance) I requested a room on one of the upper floors. I then called the morning of to confirm everything, but "Laura" informed me that rooms are strictly "first come first serve". I wasn't in the mood to argue, but needless to say we ended up on the 1st floor.

CLEANLINESS: The hotel is generally pretty clean, but the grout in our bathroom was seriously gross (see photos). The entire property is in desperate need of refurbishing.

LOCATION: The location is pretty decent in terms of hot spots in Galveston, but even in an ocean front room you can forget about hearing any waves crashing on the beach just 100 yards away. The noise from the traffic is terrible. Our balcony could have been great but all we could hear all day and most of the night were attention-starved bikers on Harleys, trucks with no muffler, and music blasting from the ever-growing abundance of Galveston rif-raff. (How about a nice strong noise ordinance, City of Galveston??)

PROPERTY: The exterior of the Casa del Mar is not bad. It looks nice and the landscaping is good. However, the elevator was broken for the first part of our stay, and walking through our interior hallway felt like walking through a jail house. The interior windows have bars on them (bars??) and there is a constantly changing assortment of bad smells: it seemed to fade from mildew, to dead fish, to yesterdays cooking, and back to mildew.

ROOMS: It's nice to have a stove and a very dented fridge, and I was told that most of the rooms now have flat screen TV's.. but that's where the fun ends. The rooms are very small and look like they have not been renovated for at least 20 years. Our bed was a joke. The mattress was so sunken in the middle it felt like sleeping in a spongy hammock. Every single light fixture is filled with ultra-bright, eye-killing florescent bulbs, even in the bedroom and living room. (I bought a regular light bulb at Kroger and screwed it into the lamp just so we didn't feel like we were serving time.)

OTHER ISSUES: There was rust on the fridge, in the bathroom, on some of the light fixtures, and the patio door frame was VERY rusted. (I know it must be difficult to maintain things when you're on the water, but at least try! One of the closets had a water-heater stuffed into it, and EVERYTHING in the room (fixtures, TV's, counter tops, linens, towels, decor) was the lowest quality I've ever seen in a 3-star hotel. I know you pay for the beach location, but you shouldn't feel like you're staying in a $59 road-side motel.

Amazingly, this property seems like it is constantly booked so they MUST have the funds to renovate. We definitely won't be back until they do.

Room Tip: (1) Choose a better hotel. (2) Get there early... As I was told, it's "first come, first...
