“Dissappointed - not really a hotel”
Reviewed February 21, 2010

We stayed here in Feb 2010 for two nights and were quite dissappointed. First, I paid on average $150/night (including tax) for a one-bedroom standard suite off-season. The primary reason I booked here was its proximity to the beach, and its gulf-view balconies. Well, the balcony door was broken so we counldn't use it until mid-way through our second day. The place is more like an apartment than a hotel. You have to clean up after yourself before you check out (i.e. take off the linens and put them next to the beds; run the dishwasher, etc.) or else you could be charged an "excessive cleaning fee". The check-in office is extremely hard to find after hours and if you check-in after 5pm you have to get your room key from this safety-deposit box, which is really hard to find in the dark. We were fortunate to find the security guard, who helped us find it. The other negative is that the hotel is away from all the restaurants and attractions. We had to drive 15 minutes to get to Mosquito Cafe for a coffee in the morning. The "hotel" does not have a restaurant or any restaurants within a walking distance. Overall, this place was really expensive for what you get, and I will never stay here again.

We exchanged this for a time share we have elsewhere. We were disappointed with the place not being an equivalent trade. Recommend that you run all dishes thru dishwasher as we found dirty dishes and flatware in the cupboards. The bathroom sink was plugged and maintenance could not unplug it. The bedroom carpet was stained and disgusting. The dryer took 4 cycles to totally dry clothes. We could not heat the place and froze at night. Service in the office was friendly, location was okay and in the warmer weather would probably be a nice and fun place to be. No activities were planned for the guests, we were on our own to go into Houston or in the more commercial areas to find things to do. We were disappointed that the cleanliness and upkeep of our unit (W31) was not up to par with other resorts/time shares that we have traded with in the past. Also, no spa on property or restaurant. The burner pans on the stove were dirty and the stove had crumbs on it when we checked in. For being only a few years old was really worn.

I left feeling that this place was just mediocre after staying two nights at the end of January. It just wasnt worth the $120/night we spent (during off season). It is directly on the beach which is the best thing about this place. "All rooms have a gulf view" is a bit misleading as our unit (13B) had a side view of the gulf and a full view of the new hosing complex being built next to it. Inside the unit, it appeared to be clean, but the shower curtain was VERY moldy which disgusted us. Little things, such as the alarm clock and t.v. remote, didnt work. Like I said I before, it wasnt worth paying the high price.

We stayed in unit 37B. It was spotless and had a nice view of the Gulf of Mexico. The staff was very nice and let us check in a couple of hours early because we arrived from Indiana a few hours early. Things I loved about this place.......1) Located on the beach. other hotels in Galveston are located on the sea wall and you must cross the busy street to get to the beach. 2) There is a washer and dryer located in the entryway of the unit. 3) Parking is covered and the spaces are big enough so your car doesn't get banged up.
The only thing I was not happy about was the internet. If you are lucky enough to get it connected you better do your business quick because it will not stay connected long. One of the things we found that was fun in Galveston is Schlitterbahn Waterpark. My son loved that place.

The damage cause by Hurricane Ike, which made landfall just a year prior to our visit, was still evident throughout Galveston Island, so we weren't quite sure what we would find at Escapes!. Escapes has recovered wonderfully from the storm. Our 2-bedroom unit was furnished well, was very clean and it had a magnificent ocean view from the balcony. The entire complex was very nice. We especially enjoyed the pool area and the beach. We had heard that he beach on Galveston Island was not that great, but we were pleasantly surprised at how nice it really was. Escapes! is a short distance away from the more "touristy" area of Galveston Island, so the beach there is much less crowded and we found it very clean. Our only complaint with Escapes! was that the pool was overfilled. The shallow area was only supposed to be about 3 ft but was closer to 4 ft so our 6 year old could not stand at all in the pool. Other than that, everything else was great! This was our first visit to Galveston Island and we can't wait to go back!

Would I return to Galveston, Texas? Probably not. Escapes was very nice. Clean and neat and the staff quite accommodating. WIFI was awful. We visited off season so the place was not crowded. A few of the guests were transient construction workers or retired locals looking to get away for a few days. The grounds were immaculate and the beach quite clean considering the hurricane devastation. All in all this is a very nice place. But the area itself left a lot to be desired...

What I look for in a Galveston Hotel/Condo is
1. View of the Gulf.
2. On the beach.
3. Clean.
This condo had all of those plus fabulous value. Check in was easy, got room E37B. That means we were on the third floor, East Side, in the smaller of the two units. You walk in and there is a washer/dryer in the entryway that you share with one other unit. As you enter your unit, the bathroom with shower/tub is straight ahead. To your left is a bedroom with queen sized bed. The bedroom is nice. You can shut the door and have privacy and quiet. The mattress was comfortable. There was a small stereo/cd player and a dvd tele in the armoir. There is an iron/board in the closet. To your right is the living room/kitchen. Along one wall is a nice kitchen with Dishwasher, Two burner stove, microwave and loads of cabinets. Dishes, Dishwasher soap, dish soap and all you really need are included. The Living room is tiny. You pull out the sleeper sofa and that is all the room there is. For us, a single couple, it was fabu. We could sleep in the living room and leave the door open and hear the ocean. There is a large window...which does not open..boo..but provides a great view of the ocean. We had towels delivered...got a ton of them, had plenty of blankets, and the heater/ac worked great. There is another dvd tv in the living room. Ceiling fans in both rooms. My husband used the hot tub/pool and it was great. We always come to Galveston in October to avoid the crowds, it was often like having your own beach. We didn't even leave the condos for two days of our four day stay. We cooked, fed the seagulls on the beach, watched horses, dogs and people walk the beach...it was ubher relaxation!
I was terrified after reading some of these reviews, but honestly, we had a perfect stay! We only paid $63 per night for our four night stay...SCORE! We used Priceline. As noted by nearly everyone, it was SPOTLESS!! Just the way I like it. We will come back many times.
Oh, about the balcony, yes, it is tiny. Only one person can sit out there at a time. However, like I said, we propped the door and sat inside listening to the waves and looking out the huge window...and it was divine! You cannot beat the West End Condos that are on the Beach side of Seawall Blvd.!!!
The only negatives for me are...
a) Spotty and hard to get on the internet connection.
b) No pets allowed.
