We were at the hotel for the ghost tour and dinner. Our service was probably different than we would have received in a smaller group. There was about 22 of us at a large table. We chose the porkchops as our entree and were pleased with the taste. Food was warm when it arrived. Porkchops were tender and the glaze was not too sweet. Atmosphere was great!

We took our visiting Kansas City friends for brunch. Wow what a treat. The many well prepared selections, continuously served and included mimosas, great service staff, the ambience of the old Hotel Galvez with wonderful live piano music in the background and the view overlooking the Gulf of Mexico made for an incredible Sunday morning brunch. The ham and prime rib carving station was my favorite until I sampled the many offerings of fresh seafood and that favorite only lasted until I toured the desert offerings. Try the bread pudding – yum, yum. If visiting Galveston on a Sunday give this brunch a try. Complimentary valet parking is provided.

Shrimp gumbo is a house speciality. Kind of pricey but inline with other hotels. Service good. Beautiful surroundings.

We've been staying at the Galvez for some time now, but aside from the breakfast buffet, we've rarely eaten at the hotel...until now. During our last three visits on Mother's Day, Memorial Day and then 4th of July, we've dined in the restaurant and/or had room service. I'll go ahead and get the cons out of the way by saying that our first experience eating something other than the breakfast buffet was pretty awful. We ate lunch by the pool two days in a row and while the food wasn't all that bad, the service was horrendous. We had a burger and a sandwich and it must have taken 30 minutes for them to arrive. While waiting, we never really saw our waitress to refill our waters or take another drink order, and it was hot! We finally got our food and the ranch I had asked for on the side wasn't there, so it took another 10-15 minutes to bring that and even longer to bring us napkins. Even worse, instead of bringing us cloth napkins like everyone else had, she brought us a stack of bar naps that we ended up having to cleverly hold on to so they wouldn't blow away. It was a mess. That Sunday morning, we did room service and order a pot of coffee, a pastry plate and fruit place. First, they forgot to bring the coffee mugs and it took about 10 minutes for them to come back with them. Then we realized that we didn't have any cream either. The pastries - two croissants and a danish - were not only tiny and looked like they came from Sam's Club, but cold and barely edible. The strawberries and grapes on the fruit plate were all bruised and also not really edible. We hardly at a bite, but of course, got charged the room service fee and automatic 18% gratuity, which we were not happy about. We chalked it up to the restaurant being under construction for remodel and it being Mother's Day weekend and didn't say anything until making our reservation for the Memorial Day sale. I expected them to offer to comp us a meal on our return or something, but they just told us the restaurant had reopened and they had a new menu and chef and to give them another try. We did and it was delicious that time. I had the market fish and he had a steak and then dessert delivered to our room and everything was perfect. One of those days, we ordered some apps by the pool and all were good except the guacamole, which looked like baby food, had no flavor and was definitely not fresh or made on site. That got sent back. Once again, we were under-impressed with the service around the pool/pool bar. Finally, we went back July 3-5 and since we arrived kind of late our first night, figured it would be easier to just eat in the restaurant. We ordered the sauteed crab fingers, a house salad and I had the mahi mahi and he had a ribeye. The crab fingers and salad were by far my favorite. For only $13, you get a very good portion of crab fingers sauteed in butter, herbs, garlic and red chili flakes, which added a nice kick. The house salad had apples, spiced pecans, aged cheddar and a basil garlic vinaigrette that I could have drank, it was so good. My fish was decent, but was a little dry from being cooked too long. Because we loved the crab fingers and salad so much, we returned the next day for lunch and ordered them again, and also tried their organic spinach salad. That salad was wonderful as well. We ate there once more for dinner and again for lunch on July 5. Yes, it was that delicious! Plus, it was convenient, as we weren't staying too long and wanted to take advantage of as much time as we could at the beach and pool. This time we did not do the breakfast buffet or any breakfast at all, and didn't eat at the pool, but did order drinks at the pool. Yet again, the service at the pool was lacking. It was the same ladies as the two times before and even though there were about 10 of them out there, all seemed overwhelmed and not overly excited to be there. We did have a nice surprise and delight our last day there when they passed out popsicles to everyone at the pool. It was a great refresher with the heat and kind of made you feel like a kid again. Overall, I would highly recommend Bernardo's at the Galvez, whether you're staying there or not. For what it is and for being at a high end hotel, the prices are not bad. The poolside service may be in need of an adjustment, but inside at the bar and restaurant, the service is excellent. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 are for the aforementioned issues with our initial dining experience, and the ongoing poor service at the pool. Hopefully that last issue will be resolved before we go back again, probably in a month.

The breakfast buffet was nice, pretty good, and not too pricey ($15pp), so it is a good choice when staying at the hotel. The cook didn't speak a whole lot of English and didn't understand I wanted custom scrambled eggs rather than an omelette, but overall it was a good meal.
