“Crowded, noisy, long waits, hokey animatronics, mediocre food.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2005

Granted, we probably picked the worst possible time to go to the Rainforest Cafe (6:45pm on Monday night during Spring Break). We took a $5 10-minute boat ride through the back side of the restaurant, then stood around shoulder-to-shoulder in their gift shop while we waited for a table. It was almost 8:00 before we were seated. When they call you for your table, be aware you're still about 20 minutes away from actually sitting down.

The animatronics (a couple of gorillas and a few birds) were no where near the caliber of those at Disneyland or DisneyWorld. The rainstorm happens about every 30 minutes. It was fun the first couple of times we heard it, but got old after the fifth and only served to remind up how long we had been there.

The food was nothing special and overpriced. We made four requests to our waiter to get steak sauce for my son's small piece of steak. We finally got some from a waiter at anther table. Dinner for three, with appetizer but no alcohol or desserts was over $90 (including a 10% tip for bad service).

There are much better places to eat in Galveston. This will not be on our dining list on future trips to the Gulf.

“Fun atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2004

The draw of this place is deffinately the atmosphere. It is a fun place with a real rainforest flair. But to compare it to Disneyland is going a bit too far. The kids enjoyed it, although my two year old was afraid of the gorillas and a little nervous of the thunder and lightning. The food was barely above average and way too pricey. Overall, it was a fun place to visit, but not one I would repeat too soon. My pocket book couldn't take it.

“Skip It”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2004

Food was okay but overpriced. Same food as the Landry's next door (owned by the same company according to the menu). Worst part is the 1 hour wait in their crowded and guady gift shop even at off peak times (3:00 p.m.). We were herded like chattle in the line that forms after they call your name. Overall I would skip this one....

“A Must-See while in Gaveston!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2004

As was mentioned, this is a total experience..not just a place to eat. We absolutely loved it!! It's fairly pricey, but worth it for the experience. Expect adult meals to cost around $15 or so and kid's meals are $5.99. We spent about $45 for 2 adults and 1 child. But, it is absolutely amazing. There are gorillas and elephannts that move and make noise every 10-12min. and a "thunderstorm" every 30 min. There's also a gift shop and river adventure ride ($5/person) that goes through various rainforests. Huge aquariums are everywhere and the whole place almost overwhelms your senses. We tried to eat there one evening, but there was an hr and a half wait, so I suggest trying to make reservations if going at night. However, we went back the next afternoon, and experienced no wait at all.

“This is an Experience, not just a restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2004

This restaurant makes Disneyland look boring. It is heaven on earth for kids here. The inside looks and sounds like a real rainforest and has a large aquairium. On the outside hundreds of people watch every half hour as a large volcano erupts. Texas Monthlyjust did a story on this restaurant and volcano. The food is excellent although pricey, but well worth the ambience. Try to stay away from the overpriced exotic drinks and deserts. The kids loved it so much we are driving back to Galveston just so we can eat at this place again! There are all sorts of connected games, dances and rides outside the cafe. This place is not yet highly rated, probably because it is new. The large crowds prove that this is already the hottest spot in Galveston! Do not miss it.
