Best Western Galveston West Beach Hotel
Ranked #32 of 51 Hotels in Galveston
Reviewed March 17, 2013

We have stayed at this La Quinta facility over the past 7-8 years and found it to be a very good hotel with good infrastructure maintenance. However, on our last stay we noticed that the Pine-Sol smell in the room was almost overwhelming. We travel with a toy poodle, so it's possible that the hotel assigned us a room for a family with a pet. Fortunately, in our old age we have realized that we should carry a room deodorizer in a baggie in our luggage. After a couple of hours, the Pine-Sol smell was diminished. As we opened the door to the room, we could see marks on the wall that indicated that luggage or carts, etc. had been carelessly pushed against the wall. We realize that this is not a brand new hotel, but just a simple paint job would have covered the marks. It appears that the management of this hotel has changed from our previous visits, We will stay at another hotel in Galveston in the future if we can locate one that accepts pets without a charge. All in all, we believe that this La Quinta is in need of a remodel and possibly better onsight management that will inspect all of the guest rooms. We are being charitable with our "average" rating for this hotel.

Everthing was ok. Unlike other reviews, I thought it was very clean. It needed some minor repairs here and there. It had unusual smells and humidity. The staff wasn't rude, but didn't seem to put any effort into friendliness. Not especially good or bad.

Check in staff was super nice when we got there at 1130pm. Rooms were good size. step out balcony with view of gulf ( if you looked to the left).
Morning buffet is nothing to brag about. Ran out of waffle mix about 30 min prior to ending time. One guest walking around the food area barefoot and several in pajamas ( gross!!) at breakfast. Not enough seats. We didn't even bother the next morning.
However, we quickly realized that there are no restaurants close by. So we had to drive to the east side of sea wall to find breakfast.
Choose hotel due to close proximity of moody gardens (supposed to be less than a mile). There was a ton of road construction, several roads closed and detours make us go WAY out of way. Not the hotels fault, but had I known we would have choose somewhere closer to restaurants for same price.

I didn't think the hotel could be as bad as the reviews that were posted because I thought that La Quinta would not allow a franchisee to be this awful. I was wrong. Our room was not ready at 3:15 when we arrived and the desk clerk was not the least bit concerned. To be fair, I think they are so understaffed that only the employees with the thickest skin have survived. We were 5th in line that was told we would not be able to check in and no one could estimate how long it would be. We finally got into our room at 5:00. It was not clean. Hair in the sink and left over, used dental floss on the bathroom shelf. YIKES. The shuttle to the cruise ship was an exercise in stress. Line up at 9:30 to get on a list to go whenever the one shuttle van is available to take you. Coming back, we waited one hour for the shuttle to pick us up. This hotel is a mess and management doesn't care. The staff takes the abuse for the terrible conditions. To add fuel to the fire, the rates were too high. If we could have changed hotels, we would have, but by the time we we realized what a mistake we had made it was too late. Luckily for us our cruise was fabulous.

Wife and I dropped the kid off at grandmaw's for Saturday/Sunday and we decided to take a trip to Galveston. We should have stayed home in The Woodlands.

We arrive at the hotel around 1:30 Saturday afternoon to check into a room we saw online. It advertised that it was a jacuzzi suite and rented for $209.00 a night. This was a little steep, but due to a few conventions in town, this was the last room available on the entire island it seemed like.

We booked the room, only to find out we had to wait til 3:00 to check in. So, we went to a late lunch and came back at 5:00, only to find the room still wasnt ready. We waited in the lobby until 5:45 until our room was ready. The manager (Phil) knocked $30 off our bill for the trouble there.

Finally we move our bags into the room only to find that the room was in horrible condition. Rm 116. Dont rent that room. Holes in the wall from old picture frames, a tiny 24" TV, exposed wiring hanging from the ceiling, and the best part, when you turned on the water to the jacuzzi, it leaked water all down the side of the tub into the floor.

We talked to the manager (again) who knocked a few more dollars off the bill, but it was still very very annoying. Paper thin walls, so you could hear all the hallway traffic ALL night long, including several people pounding on our door around 2:00 a.m. in the morning.

Lastly....this was the first hotel I've rented that I read the reviews about and I literely searched the room/matress and sheets for bed bugs. We didn't find any, but I dont think that should have to be a pre-rec to rent a room.

We will never stay here again.
