Islander East Condominiums
Reviewed September 7, 2013 via mobile

Been coming here for thirty years best spot on the island. It is showing age but its perfect spot away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Lobby is remodeled and looks comfy and is the perfect place to watch a storm roll in.

This is the site of our families annual get together. We have been coming here every summer for over 30 years and while it's beginning to show its age, its still a favorite spot. We can't imagine staying anywhere else in Galveston. The units are a mixture of full time residents and rental units. The rental units are individually owned and the unit owners are responsible for the furnishings, so there is a wide variety but we have found all of them more than acceptable. This past summer (July 2013) we rented four units for a week and they were all quite nice. We had units that sleep 8, 6, 4 and 2 and they all had well equipped kitchens. (The unit that sleeps 8 even had a washer and dryer in the unit - there is also a pay laundry on the ground level).

Most of the hotels in Galveston are on the back (land) side of the sea wall so you have to cross a busy street to get to the beach area. Islander East is one of the very few accommodations on the ocean side of the sea wall with direct access to the beach.

If you are looking for all of the amenities of a resort hotel, this is not it, but if you are looking for a good comfortable place to relax and enjoy easy access to the beach with most of the comforts of home, this is an excellent choice.

Room Tip: The rooms are individually owned and furnished and therefore unique. I suggest calling the facility...

Stayed in two bedroom one bath condo facing the beac which slept 8.
Pros. Condo was very clean. Beach access was awesome. Staff was nice and helpful.
Cons. Unit was small. The kitchen is really not a kitchen. It is actually at the entrance to the condo and no more than a hallway. The kitchen included pots, pans and such but no room. The only seating for meals was a bar along the wall with bar stools. The AC was VERY noisy, clicking and coming on and off. Not normal! We never slept well with the noisy AC.
I felt like we paid too much for what we got. If you are not concerned with size and noise doesn't bother you then this place would work fine.

Location is great. The "bridge" the beach is tight. The room was good. The manger was the rudest. We will not stay or recommend this place just because of her. I'll stay next door next time. Thanks for ruining ours at day.

Over the years we rented here several times. We loved the location directly on the Gulf with no busy 4 lane street between the property and the Gulf with the noise of the street drowning out the sounds of the waves. We ultimately bought a 1 bedroom unit for ourselves. We still love it. I agree with the positive reviews and have some suggestions on how to avoid unpleasant experiences. First some background information. All condos for rent are owned by individuals and are decorated and updated by them. Some units are not fully updated. Most units available for rent are in the rental pool managed by the building staff according to rules determined by condo owners, the staff does not have the authority to grant exceptions to the rules, like occupancy limits. The condos are heated/cooled by motel style heat pumps that vent to the exterior of the building. Other than the heat pump in a lower corner, the windows/sliders facing the balconies and the Gulf are floor to ceiling giving unsurpassed unobstructed views. There are some units that do not front on the Gulf, so if you must have oceanfront be sure to ask for it. As noted in another review, the efficiency units are small, for a more enjoyable time get at least a 1 bedroom suite. The best way to get a condo that is updated and oceanfront is to go to the Islander East web site and call directly. The staff is familiar with the condos available to rent and can assist you with getting one to meet your needs within the existing rules.

Howie is one of the senior staff members. He is courteous and helpful, but he is not authorized to break the occupancy rule set by the condo owners.

Have a great time here. There are many grat eating places in all price ranges close by.

Room Tip: No fitness center, fat finger on iPad.

The condo was perfectly adequate. The direct beach access was great. The pool was smaller but clean and kept well. The reason for the unfavorable review is a desk clerk named Howard ("Howie") who spoke to our party of 6 professionals like we were a nuisance. In fact, he screamed at a member of our party who lost his breath trying to get a luggage cart out the door, rather than perhaps offering assistance. We had an additional unexpected guest join us who would have made our party 1 more than the facility allowed. He'd traveled across the country to join us and we offered to pay any additional fee or move to a larger room or anything else to allow us to have our beloved US Marine join us. Howard informed us he was prohibited from joining us, so a member of our party got another hotel room 30 minutes away, which was as close as we could get at the last minute on a Friday afternoon. Someone who works in the service industry should have better professional skills and should actually enjoy interacting with people rather than humiliating a guest with physical limitations, yelling at guests standing in the lobby and generally behaving in a bizarre, rude and hysterical manner, except in the presence of the homeowners. I'd strongly suggest a change in personnel if this place desires return customers.

Mold....room was unfit for anyone to stay in! Staff (Manager) was rude (understatement). We asked to be transferred to a different room (they were only about 60% full according to the "manager"),...they wouldn't move us so we were forced to leave at 1:30 IN THE MORNING and find another place to stay! When I asked for a refund because they were unable to provide us with a room...they said no!! I would recommend to anyone....to NOT stay here. This was a horrible experience on the eve of our wedding !!
