“Awesome tree sculptures commemorate their former tree selves”

These tree stumps sculptures capture the passerby by surprise sometimes in the residential areas. Some are particularly stunning in their detail and subject matter. I particularly liked the tim man, the one in the children's playground and dolphins. They seem to be on many streets and there is a brochure so that you can tour yourself. What a creative way to save a relic of nature by turning it into a piece of art. Congratulations to the sculptor artists.

The first day we went on a bus tour to learn about the city and this is when we found out about the Tree Sculptures. We saw many on the bus tour, but I couldn't get great pictures of them.

After Hurricane Ike, the city had many of the Oak trees turned in to sculptures. I believe there are around 20 sculptures. I thought it was a very unique idea! How great it was to turn a tragedy into art.

The visitor center in Galveston (which is actually the same location that the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the Texans.) has a map showing you where to walk/drive to see the sculptures. I choose to walk because it was gorgeous out and I wanted to see the beautiful architecture of the homes. You could easily drive, too, and get done much quicker. The sculptors are one 4 or 5 streets and stretch about 10 blocks. It took me about 2 hours to walk, but if you drove you could do it in 30 minutes.

I would pick up the map because some can be easy to miss. Plus the map has a bit of info on each sculpture. My favorite was the Wizard of Oz Tin man and Toto.

Anytime I have out of towners, checking out the Tree Sculptures is on the list. It's fun to scout them out and see how beautiful the lawns and homes are. It's also a great photo opportunity to show off Galveston. You can find the location maps around the island or just drive up Ball Street to find most of them!

Nice sculpters when you could see them. But with the locations and traffic its best to center your trip on some of the other many things to do

It is simply amazing what has been done with destroyed trees after Hurricane Ike. The tree sculptures in the east end and other neighborhoods are truly wonderful works of art. They are all very unique and fun to see. The east end is a nice walking tour in cool weather. If you end up at Mosquito Café, there is a sculpture in their parking lot!
