I can't believe riding the ferry was free. We fed seagulls at the back of the ferry and we saw dolphins. If you have never been on a ferry I recommend checking this out! If you have children, this would be such a great experience for them!

Our B&B hostess recommended taking the ferry from Galveston to the Bolivar Peninsula to avoid the wait with a car. Since it was mid-morning in January, the car wait was minimal and we wished we had taken our car to explore the peninsula. According to the crew of the ferry, there isn't much out there, but the Point Bolivar Lighthouse intrigued us. Upon our return we learned it is out of service and not open to the public, so we didn't miss much in that regard. Check tripadvisor before you go. There are restaurants out there and you could make a half day trip of this.

We had no idea that we were going to have to take a ferry to get to our hotel. After a 9 hour car ride, it was nice that we were able to board quickly, walk around and take a restroom break, let the kids stretch their legs and then be on our way again. We were very surprised that it was free.

This is about a 5 minute ride across (5 mins back). It's free & you might see dolphins...you also get a view of the lighthouse. It takes you to Bolivar Peninsula, so if you've never ridden a ferry, you should take the little trip. You can ride over in your car, or walk on. There are bathrooms on the top level & enclosed seating (if it's cold that's a good choice). Either way, car or walk on, once the ferry starts moving you are pretty much free to move about the boat at will.

Hard to beat the cost...free. You can park your car..get on the ferry..ride across..stay on..and ride back, courtesy of the Texas Dept. of Transporation. About an hour round trip.
