Our kids had never been on a ferry. We rode it and seen lots of dolphins in the harbor. Great experience and it was FREE!!

This is a fun little ride if you just want to try it out. We have gone numerous times. You can go on top and look at the views. And its free!!!

My early childhood was coming to Galveston on weekends and the Port Bolivar Ferry was my favorite thing. It still is. Get out of the car and go to the railing and watch the dolphins dancing in the water. You will always see them. They love to entertain their audience. Be careful if you have to park against the cabin of the ferry and be sure you give yourself room to open your door to get out.....other wise you are trapped and will miss the entire point. The ferry is less to get across than to enjoy the experience.

The ferry system is part of the Texas Dept. of Transportation. So the ferry ride is FREE for you. . . and your vehicle if you want. It is a nice 20 minute or so ride each way. You can simply walk up (or drive on) and you will enjoy a nice scenic ride across the bay. I saw a pod of dolphins on my recent trip. You get great views of the ships coming into the Houston Ship Channel. I recommend it.

The ferry to and from Port Bolivar can be boarded by car or on foot. We have seen lots of sea foul and porpoises on these rides.... So take a camera! We take this route to visit relatives in Beaumont but there appear to be several shops along the road on the Port Bolivar side plus a rusty lighthouse worthy of future visits.
