Taking the ferry over to Bolivar is a fun experience for family and friends. The beaches on Bolivar are clean. We took a picnic over and spent a few hours on the Bolivar beach.
You can take some old bread and feed the seagulls off the back of the ferry. The kids love it and the ferry ride is free.

One of the most enjoyable and FREE things to do when in Galveston is take the Bolivar Ferry!! I go whenever I need a dolphin fix! I usually walk on/walk off, unless I'm going to Stingarees for dinner or taking the short-cut to NOLA! I love the 15 minute ride, the sea air and the dolphins and birds that follow the ferry! You can even take your car on for free. If it is during the height of tourist season, plan ahead so you don't have to wait too long! Enjoy!! It's one of things I always take my guests on!

You can't beat the free ride. If you don't want to go to Bolivar, but want to enjoy the ferry, skip the line. Stay in the right lane all the way to the ferry landing, park in the free parking lot, and walk on board. Ride it over and back as much as you want. Go to the upper deck and keep an eye out for dolphins...and sea birds of all types...

You can of course take your car across to Bolivar peninsula or alternatively you can simply go park and ride across and back. There is a place to sit inside and you can take a lunch with you. Beware, if you just go for the ride there is nothing to get off and walk to on either side. No stores, restaurants or anything like that.

If you do take your car across you can drive down the peninsula and go to Stingarees restaurant or go fishing at roll over pass or even just go see all the new houses built since hurricane IKE.

Just BEWARE, the ferry can be a LONG, LONG wait during Spring Break and in during summer vacations. Make sure you get the times and find out how many ferries are running. After a certain time at night they only run one ferry I believe.

You can take a loaf of bread and get to the back of the ferry and feed the seagulls.
