My wife and I used to come to Galveston when we were first married (1988) and just ride the ferry at night because it was cool, romantic, and free (we were broke). It's still a great thing to do. During the day, you will likely see dolphins, and at night, it's very relaxing to stand at the front of the boat and smell the sea.

Great free way to see tons of dolphins. Kids and adults will love it! Total ferry ride one way is about 18 minutes and then 18 minutes back. Don't even have to take the car to Port Bolivar if you don't want to.

The ferry had been recommended; you can go by foot (parking available by the port) or take your vehicle. We decided to go by foot but wished we'd taken the car. We thought it was just across to the land on the other side - but it was further away and absolutely great to see the dolphins jumping and swimming alongside. Also the pelicans on the other side were excellent to see close up. We walked along the road for a bout 20 mins but it was incredibly hot and we couldn't go further. We had been advised to walk but if we'd taken the car we could have explored further afield. Staff on the ferry were friendly. It was a great trip!

We had to go through the "search" before we got on-but that is okay. Rather be safe than not. Wait was short and trip seemed quick. Had someone with us that this was their first time. There were several dolphins playing as we crossed the water.

We've been riding on the ferry for decades. My children have fun watching the birds and looking for dolphins. It makes the "trip" exciting.
