“Best free ride in Texas!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2011

Buy a bag of cheap bread and feed the sea gulls off the back of the boat. Watch for dolphins in the bay. We never go to Galveston without riding the ferry. Park your car and just walk onto the ferry.

“Great short outing for the kids and young at heart”

Took a loaf of bread and fed the sea gulls from the ferry, made a u-turn on the other side and repeated. Great fun!

“What a kick - porpoises, pelicans and a great view of the ship channel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2011

First please note that in the heading on these reviews is the word, "fee". It should be "free". There is no charge as this ferry system is part of the Texas Highway Dept. (your tax dollars at work). The primary purpose, of course, is to transport cars and trucks to and from the Bolivar Penninsula, but walk-ons are welcome. You can either stand on the front or rear of the ferry or go upstairs to an enclosed cabin. Either way, you're very likely to see the dolphins following along and will certainly get your fill of brown and white pelicans as well as the ubiquitous laughing gulls. You'll also get a view of the sunken concrete ship from WW II, the Bolivar lighthouse, and the numerous big ships - tankers, shrimp boats and cruise ships - going in and out of Galveston and Houston harbors. What a cheap thrill, and a great experience for kids.

The trip each way takes about fifteen minutes, and you don't need to disembark if you've walked on and just want to ride back. There are restrooms at each port as well as on board. No food or drink service though.
