As you would expect from a state park, there is no alcohol allowed and they do not let you drive on the beach. It is a good place to take the kids and safer without the cars going by. Also, due to the no alcohol, the is no crowd to deal with.

The best thing this park has going for it is the lack of other people. Walk down the beach a short distance from the main parking area and you'll be essentially alone. I don't know about the camping, because we just went for the afternoon, but here are the knocks against day-tripping: 1) You have to pay to get in, though there are numerous miles of free beach all up and down the coast. 2) It's supposed to be an oasis of seashells, but we didn't find a lousy one. My kids were pretty disappointed. 3) The current is strong, much, much stronger than along the seawall, so beware. If you don't keep track of where you are, you'll quickly find yourself half a mile from your gear. 4) The ranger, if not exactly unfriendly, seemed thoroughly uninterested in helping or enlightening us in any way.

We just got back from Galveston Beach State Park and we had a great time. The beach is as nice or nicer than any around (and we looked ALL over). Yea, there's seaweed but it's a beach so I'd think you'd expect seaweed. We really didn't have any problem with it. All the park staff was very helpful and nice... they even printed our NASA tickets for us. The showers, restrooms, and even the porta-potty was very clean. Not very often you can camp in the opposite side of the sand dunes Gulf... We'll go back.

We were hesitant to stay here after reading previous reviews but were pleasantly surprised. We tent camped on the bayside and had no real issues, other than super hungry mosquitos. Take bug spray!!! You can buy it at the ranger station if need be. Anyhow, both rangers I spoke with were very helpful and nice, we only saw two rats (which are actually a large type of mouse, not rat), and both were at the edge of the tall grass along the road. The showers are not open on bayside until July but driving to the showers by the beach was no big deal especially since we only showered after playing on the beach anyhow. The beach itself was rather clean other than a band of dried seaweed up from the waters edge. I even spoke to locals who go there to swim instead of the more crowded public beaches. We didn't see anything radically special but this really was a pleasant place to spend a few days. Do keep your cooler (and your chocolate) in your car at night, the cute raccoon buddy that peeked in our tent was appreciative for this oversight.

WOW! What a disappointment! This advise is for the folks who are thinking about TENT camping. If they tell you there is no vacancy on the beach side, RUN! The camping area on the "bayside" is aweful. If you think you are actually going to be on the bay, think again! The area is overgrown with weeds and the ONLY way you can see the bay, is to stand on top of the picnic table! Plus you also have to pay an "entrance" fee to the beach side, even if you don't go there! Only ONE toilet was working, and the showers are NOT open!
