We were hesitant to stay here after reading previous reviews but were pleasantly surprised. We tent camped on the bayside and had no real issues, other than super hungry mosquitos. Take bug spray!!! You can buy it at the ranger station if need be. Anyhow, both rangers I spoke with were very helpful and nice, we only saw two rats (which are actually a large type of mouse, not rat), and both were at the edge of the tall grass along the road. The showers are not open on bayside until July but driving to the showers by the beach was no big deal especially since we only showered after playing on the beach anyhow. The beach itself was rather clean other than a band of dried seaweed up from the waters edge. I even spoke to locals who go there to swim instead of the more crowded public beaches. We didn't see anything radically special but this really was a pleasant place to spend a few days. Do keep your cooler (and your chocolate) in your car at night, the cute raccoon buddy that peeked in our tent was appreciative for this oversight.

WOW! What a disappointment! This advise is for the folks who are thinking about TENT camping. If they tell you there is no vacancy on the beach side, RUN! The camping area on the "bayside" is aweful. If you think you are actually going to be on the bay, think again! The area is overgrown with weeds and the ONLY way you can see the bay, is to stand on top of the picnic table! Plus you also have to pay an "entrance" fee to the beach side, even if you don't go there! Only ONE toilet was working, and the showers are NOT open!

Ok so the fee is ridiculous. I mean there are state parks elsewhere free to get in that have scenic, VERY SCENIC trails, mountains, boardwalks, waterfalls, etc without a fee. If you are gonna have a fee how about make sure staff is friendly and helpful? I heard, but am not sure they are volunteers, if so they still need supervised and to provide better service, also tent camping rates are too high low at other SP areas as well and for better locations.i love Galveston and the bad service or overlooked areas really burn me up. If you pull in the money put it to good use. They were blaming Ike but that 2008 and the rest of the island has all but come back . Why would TPW not fix some of these issues.

The spaces are fine and the facilities are OK. However, just outside the areas they keep mowed are thousands of rats (not mice) and the snakes who dine on the rats. We were told they have multiplied since hurricane Ike because of the decrease of houses in the area. We have 2 Rat Terrier dogs, and one jumped out the door of the travel trailer, running after a rat. She ran into the high grass chasing it, and got bitten by a water moccasin. Yes, we know about the leash law, but this was simply an accident. $300 in vet fees later, we think she is going to be OK. We were not warned about either type of critter, other than the cursery sign warning that snakes reside in the park. This sign is posted at every state park. One evening (we stayed 4 days) we went to the showers, and as I opened the door, one of the rats ran inside and would not come out. NOT PLEASANT. I chose another shower, however the rats are not very skittish and could just as easily come into the next one.
If you need a vet in Galvestion, I heartly recommend The Animal Clinic located at 7th and Broadway. They were wonderful, and I feel saved my dog.
We will not be visiting this park again until they clean up their act.

It is probably way better when the weather is warmer.
But, not much happening in January. It was kind of cold and pretty windy. And they wanted to charge us three or four dollars per head to take a quick, 5 minute look at the beach and the gulf!
