It is taking TPWD a long time to get this park back in shape, but it is slowly coming back! It is right on the beach with beach access....no trees, lots of breeze, can get really hot in the summer!

We paid over $75.00 to tent camp here for two nights. The staff when we checked in were rather abrupt, not particularly friendly or helpful. I thought that the tent sites would be away from the RV sites but we were trapped between two stinky RVs. The "bayside" camping we paid for was really sand dune and RV view camping as you couldn't see the ocean at all from your campsite.
The beach had trash, sea weed, dead birds, and jelly fish washed up on it and the trails back to the campsite were not clearly marked.
We had to get in the car and drive to the bathroom with flush toilets and the only porta potty had a figure of a woman with a dress so I wasn't sure if my husband was supposed to use that one or not.
When we went to leave we found a ticket on our windshield claiming we were parked in space #20 and "needed to register and pay fees" although we were plainly parked in our assigned area #21 with our registation sheet taped plainly on the windshield. When we explained that at check out they threatened to charge us an extra fee and argued with us about it, finally conceeding that there would be no extra charge. That smacked of a scam to me, especially since the Ranger was the one who was making the claims and was rather rude about it
As far as wild life, I saw far more and varied species of birds in downtown Galveston and the beaches there were clean. I will gladly go back to Galveston, but I will never return to that horrible excuse for a State Park and this is from someone who loves to camp!

When camping here, be ready to pay a $5 per person fee a day even if you weren't planning to go to the beach. This is addition to any campground fees. The state website doesn't clearly state this. This definitely adds up when you have a lot of people staying for a lot of nights. Also, the restrooms by the tent loop were blocked off because of "construction" and once again, the state websites doesn't clearly state this. Talk about disappointment. Other than that, decent campground. No privacy though. Alcoholic beverages aren't allowed but it's easy to get away with it. At 10:00 pm the gates are locked and you need a code to get in. It's a padlock so it's a pain having to get out and unlock.

Great place to spend the day, small crowd compared to other beaches and a good place to camp as well!

We visited the park during our stay and then came back and visited again. The first time, we went to the beach. Outdoor shower facilities and restrooms, but no changing facility. The park office offered a few informational items and trail maps. These maps were helpful for the hike that we took into the area away from the beach, a marshy area with very nice walking trails. When hiking , we saw a wide variety of birds. Very nice. We saw no one else out on the trails when we were hiking. Unfortunately there looks to be development encroaching on this wonderful natural area. See it while it lasts.
