Owner description: Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure was completed in 1895. Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a self-guided tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. The mansion is one of the finest places to visit, a trip back in time. Touring the museum should definitely be on the top on the list for things to do on Historic Galveston Island. Even though I am a native Texan, I had never visited the Moody Mansion Museum. What a treat! Our tour guide, Claire, was so informative and knowledgeable of the history of Galveston Island and the Moody Family. You get a real feel for what life was like in the early 1900's if you were "well-healed" and how the Storm of 1900 transformed the island. The mansion is beautiful and has undergone quite a restoration after Hurricane Ike. The tour is approximately 1-1/2 hours and is probably not a good idea for someone who has trouble navigating stairs. You will ascend to the second story of the mansion and the stairs are steep (not a lot of stairs, but small and steep). Well worth the visit. Their website has a buy one, get one free coupon. Enjoy!

This was the last stop on our island tour. We also toured Bishops Palace & Ashton Villa. These are three very beautiful mansions. All three are well worth the time & money for the tours. The Moody Mansion was the better for us, mainly because of our guide. Both of the other two had good guide, this one was exceptional! It's hard to believe some of the things that were put into the houses.

For our Moody Mansion tour, we arrived just after one tour left. They provide tours on the hour. So we had to wait about 45 minutes until the next tour started. That was not a problem, however, because it gave ample time to browse thru the garage with it's old cars and posters of the period, and also walk the grounds to look at the outside architecture. Our tour was "on paper" as one hour. Our guide let us know up front that it would be about an our and half. At the one hour mark, she let us know and gave the option to leave if we wanted or needed to (nobody in our group of 20+ left, we were all captivated.) We actually finished the tour in just under 2 hours. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, personable and really gave character to the entire experience by drawing us back to what was going on in that time. This trip was well worth our time & money and we would do it again! One last note. My wife & I were there alone. Had we brought our kids we probably would have left at the hour mark. There were no kids in the group and I believe this would not really hold their interest. No sitting on furniture, no touching or leaning on the walls, etc. (after all, it's a hundred & 20 years old.). Use your own judgement. But for a pair of architecture & old-tyme nuts, it was right up our alley!

We did not visit but just beware that the tickets seem to sell our hours before the tours take place. We arrived at 2:30 for the 3pm tour and they were already full. We didn't read that anywhere and hope that can help someone else out who really wants to visit it like we did. :)

Very knowledgable guide. Worth the time. Wish it didn't have so many stairs but that comes with the time period.
