Owner description: Restored to its turn of the century splendor, the 28,000 square-foot, four-story structure was completed in 1895. Today, our guests visit 20 rooms on a self-guided tour that depicts the home life of a powerful Texas family. The Moodys established one of the great American financial empires. Based on cotton, it grew to include banking, ranching, insurance and hotels. The mansion is one of the finest places to visit, a trip back in time. Touring the museum should definitely be on the top on the list for things to do on Historic Galveston Island. “Very Interesting Tour”
Reviewed March 19, 2012

This was an interesting tour of how the very wealthy in Galveston lived back at the turn of the last century. My teenage daughter and I enjoyed it very much; my husband, not so much. Beautiful furniture and art work on the upper levels. The basement level still showed the watermarks from the last flood. We wished they'd had the furniture put back down there, as it basically was the servants quarters, kitchen, etc. Still, all in all, a very interesting tour. I do wish they'd make the tours smaller in order to better see some room details, though.

See how the 1% lived in the late 1800s. Enough said!

“Moody Gardens”
Reviewed February 22, 2012

Since I don't see a listing for the Gardens, I shall use this title. The Moody Gardens was our main reason to visit Galveston. I had visited the Rainforest exhibit years ago, and wanted to share the experience with my son (A professional artist) and two granddaughters. An excellent exhibit.

“Wonderful History of Galveston with a Great Guide”
Reviewed February 19, 2012

This tour starts in the "garage" which isn't actually a historical building but it is a great starting and waiting place. The tour runs on the hour and is $8 (they have coupons on their website). While you are waiting there are 3 beautiful old cars and a history of the United States and Galveston in poster form. The tour starts with a film about the Moodys...it was interesting but as other reviewers have said it was out of focus which made it a little less enjoyable. After that the tour begins. Let me just say... this house is fascinating to walk through due to the amount of innovation it had in it for its time. The tour guide knew a lot of history and interesting facts about the house which kept you interested the whole time. My husband and I are both in our 20s and we really enjoyed this tour.

“the best !”
Reviewed February 19, 2012

This is one of the best house tours I have ever been on--and I have not passed up a "stately home" tour in many countries ! The guides are enthusiastic and well informed; I toured when it first opened and they used a theme -the debut years of Mary moody, the daughter of the house. The ballroom was decorated exactly as if for her coming out ball (family photos) and her gown lay on the bed, ready for her to don and go upstairs......really, really beautiful and well done !
