We just got back from our usual once or twice per summer stay at the Hilton Galveston Island resort, and as usual, it did not disappoint.
We are from the Houston area, so this hotel is a great little getaway for our family of 4, just a little over an hour away from home.
First let me say, we would never pay the weekend rates I see advertised, because that's just crazy! We always stay during the week when the rates are less than $200/night. We would never ever pay over $400/night! So, for the price we pay, it's difficult to be disappointed. There are some nasty hotels in the area that have the audacity to charge the same price as Hilton, and that's just a joke (e.g. LaQuinta seawall west - yuck!)
The Hilton's location is ideal, because you can set up around the pool and go back & forth all day between the resort style pool with swim-up bar and the ocean, which is directly across the street.
The beach there is nothing fancy, but it's so easy you don't have to be picky. We parked our car in the lot for free and kept our larger cooler in the trunk. All we needed for the pool was our shades & sunscreen, because the hotel provides towels. When you're ready to cross the street to the beach, just take a towel and a smaller cooler with you.
There are lifeguards at the beach who do a great job. The hotel employees are super friendly around the pool and at the swim-up bar. We ordered sodas and got free refills all day! What a deal!
There are covered cabanas with TVs at the pool for rent, and there's even a kids activity tent, which looked like a good idea for those with young ones. The pool is a good size, and there's also a hot tub and dry sauna out there.
The rooms are nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable. If you want ocean-view straight on you won't have a balcony. If you want a balcony, that part of the hotel faces perpendicular to the ocean, so it'll be a side-view.
For breakfast, there's a restaurant with $14 buffet or you can order off the menu. There's supposed to be free coffee in the lobby, but they don't keep it filled very well, so don't depend on it. Use the coffee maker in your room. Next door at the San Luis resort you have IHOP, Landry's seafood & the Rainforest Cafe. Or if you want huge portions of affordable, fresh fried catfish and shrimp that'll make you want to slap your mama, go to 39th st and ave. O 1/2 to Shrimp N Stuff - OMG!! Wow Wow Wow!
Something new to Galveston is that they are now charging for Seawall parking, so be prepared to pay $8/day with your smartphone or go ahead & buy the annual pass for $25 I believe. But if you're staying at the Hilton or the San Luis, parking is free & they give you a card for the car. Another good thing is, if you're staying at the Hilton, you have access to the spa and workout facilities at the San Luis resort as well. Our teen sons enjoyed the workout equipment.
We all had a great time hanging out around the pool for a couple of days, and we can't wait to return. This hotel is our go-to place in Galveston when the price is right.
FOR CRUISERS, I don't know if they provide transportation to or from the cruise terminal or not, but this would be a nice place to stay before or after a cruise. It's only 4 miles from the cruise terminal, which is on Harborside dr. From the hotel, you just take seawall east, left on 25th street, straight to Harborside and the cruise terminal. Easy! Take your own car or call a cab.
