Owner description: Walk along this eight-mile seawall built to protect Galveston from the raging winds and waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The water was murky brown; the wall was just that, a wall, nothing special; and the beach sand was a little disgusting. It smelled something awful ...

On our first visit to Galveston since they started charging to park on Seawall Blvd, we found the telephone/app download payment system very cumbersome--you have to punch a whole bunch of numbers into your cell phone while standing on the sidewalk in the glaring sun, hanging onto your kids and all your gear. And then, if you are so much as one minute late getting back to your car, you've already got a $17 ticket on your windshield! Of course, you can go through the whole telephone hassle again to add another hour, but you'd better start on that plenty ahead of time. Or just pay for at least one more hour than you think you'll really be there the first time around. Payment machines that you simply stick your credit card into are so much easier than this sytem!

I love this place! We spent just two afternoons here, but I came back home relaxed. Like someone had pressed my reset button. The locals are very friendly, and it's a very relaxed atmosphere. Food and shops were extremely affordable, the beachfront was clean, and the view unmatched.

The seawall was build as a protection for the city of Galveston after the hurricane of 1900 destroyed the city. It is a perfect place to stroll, jog, walk, skip, bike, or just sit and watch the waves.

The seawall is best enjoyed late at night in a convertible on a clear night... I drove it in the off season out to the toll bridge at the west end and back... Serene and calm.
