This is the historic downtown area full of shops and restaurants. This can be very crowded when cruise ships are in port. Otherwise it's quite a bit more peaceful, and there are some really good restaurants.

“Look for the neat stores.”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

On first blush the Strand looks like your ordinary collection of tourists souvenir shops and fast-food joints but look closely and you will find some real interesting places. The first one is Colonel Bubbies Surplus Center; even if you don't buy anything the visit is like visiting a military museum where everything is for sale. If you want to entertain your kids for a while just drop them off here. The train museum is at the West end of the Strand and is also worth a trip while in the area, plan for 1-2 hours at least visiting the museum and walking around the trains. Just keep walking and looking and you will find all the interesting places you want in this compact district.

“Browsing on the Strand!”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

Love to browse the Strand! Lots of shops, restaurants, historical buildings, Fisherman's Wharf on the "waterfront". Had lunch at the oldest drug store....the Star Drug Store, with it's real soda fountain and charming "oldies"; the hamburgers were "Big" and delicious, the "cherry coke" was a real cherry coke!! Walked along the open fish markets; a must see for all visitors.

“Great Shopping, Food & History”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

If we find ourselves on a cruise out of Galveston again we would once again visit the Strand. Interesting history if you look around. We saw streetlamps powered by flames, brink sidewalks, old trolley lines and the ever so fun Surplus Store.

“just a little walk along the Strand”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

Good place to shop before or after your cruise. I went to a chocolate shop and bought apples dipped in chocolate, one as a groom and one as a bride. Cute and tasty! Just wanted something a little unusual. Owners very nice and made them up within a half hour while we continued to shop. Also found cute jewlery among other things.
