“Unique Suite - Updated!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2010

We stayed one night at the Galvez before departing on the Carnival Ecstacy - we have stayed at the Galvez once before, but back in the late 1990's - loved it then and they are currently going thru a major renovation - we splurged and booked one of their one-bedroom suites (8th floor - there were only three suites on this floor - ours, one other one bedroom and the presidentail suite) you also had a large TV/living area on the floor and a full size pool table!

The room was udated nicely, everything new and in working order, great A/C, fabulous views - 37" flat panel TV in both living room and bedroom and a nice jaccuzi tub/shower in the large bathroom and the views from the windows were spectacular.

We arrived at 3:45pm and told our room was not ready due to three weddings the night before, so we had an early glass of wine at the bar - pleasant staff - by 5pm they called and our room was ready - we ordered room service later that evening and got several appetizers including a nice wine/fruit and cracker platter that wasn't on the menu but they offered to put one together at our request - fabulous!

We worked out in the fitness center before checking out and heading to the cruise terminal - GREAT fitness center - lots of updated cardio and weight machines along with free weights as well - well done!

Can't say enough about this hotel - classy, historic, comfortable and elegant - we'll be back!

Positives:

We stayed three nights at the Hotel Galvez and enjoyed our stay tremendously! Things we liked - Pool was great, Fitness Center was one of the better I've seen, Room on the Sixth floor was great and recently remodeled. The Self Parking lot was free and in a enclosed parking garage that could only be accessed by gate code. Plenty of parking even on a holiday weekend. The hotel staff was nice and accomodating ( I called beforehand hand and asked to be placed on the sixth floor and was moved from the second). Bathrobes in the rooms are a nice touch and very plush.

Tips: Captain Jacks is a bar by the Holiday inn (2 blocks away) and is a neat place to listen to live music and have drinks before supper.

Fish Tales is a restuarant west of Hotel Galvez on the seawall and had excellent fresh seafood- Blackenned Flounder and Shimp was awesome. Ask for bread- its included in the meal but u have to ask for it.

The negatives-

Galveston seems a little run down still from Hurricane Ike, but the seawall is nice and felt safe.

Avoid staying on the third or fourth floors till the renovation is completed. We overheard several people comment on it while in the elevator up to the sixth floor.

Stayed over Memorial day weekend and were charged $90 extra for monday night(memorial day), my issue is that the hotel seemed to have plenty of rooms available as most people seemed to check out on monday. Seems like they would have done better not to charge so much for that day (maybe more people would have stayed over another night). Supply and Demand??? I cant complain to much since I agreed to it.

All that said I would definately recommend the Galvez!

Thank you for staying with us and for your comments. So glad you enjoyed our pool and health club as they are the best on the island. Our room renovation on the 5th floor is nearing completion and the major work such as painting is now complete so there should be no more inconveniences to our guests. Thanks again and please come back.

As others have indicated, the rooms are quite small compared to modern hotels. However, our room was large enough to include a king bed & loveseat, so I really wouldn't consider the room size a liability. The updated bath contains a small vanity with undermount sink, and a large shower with both a hand held spray and a rain shower head. There is no bathtub. The room was clean and appeared to be recently remodeled (perhaps due to Ike?). We had a gulf view, for which we were charged an additional $50/night. The hotel is in the process of remodeling to get ready for their 100th anniversary next year. During the daytime (weekday) there was an overwhelming scent of paint coming through the air conditioning vents. The front desk feigned surprise, and said they would contact "engineering". Of course, the paint scent continued until nighttime. We were a little concerned we would be overwhelmed by the fumes--they made sure the painting was curtailed on the weekend when more guests were in the facility, though.
The pool area is quite nice--there is a somewhat small lobby bar. The restaurant (for breakfast) is horrible. The waitress had no clue as to the preparation of the dishes--the grits were simply suspended in a huge amount of water--the "biscuits" were heavy "gut bombs" served with congealed "gravy". Yuck! In the evening, the odor of rancid fish was enough to run one out of the lobby. We did notice that there was never more than one table occupied in the restaurant--most of the time it sat empty. I highly recommend walking next door to Miller's Seawall Grill for breakfast or dinner.
All in all, it was not a bad hotel. I think it would have been more in keeping with the nature of the property to furnish the rooms with Edwardian or even Art Deco reproductions, as once you were in your room all vintage charm was gone. You might as well have been staying in the Holiday Inn.

This hotel was amazing! Beautiful grounds and public rooms. We had a room facing the Gulf of Mexico and the beach. Very roomy and clean. We needed a refrigerator and there was no problem getting one brought up to our room at no extra charge. The pool was fantastic - see pictures. They even had complimentary bicycles and we used them to pedal over to the harbor side of the island. Best eats are Olympia Grill on the harbor side and Millers next to the hotel (must have the crab dressing!!)
The only downfall was that they were still doing some repairs from a Hurricane and they were not suppose to start working until after 9am but they were hammering at 8am - one morning only though.

We stayed at The Hotel Galvez for 3 nights over Memorial Day weekend. Overall we had a great time. The staff are very friendly and the accomodations are lovely. We really enjoyed the pool area with pool bar! On Friday and Saturday nights they have live music in the lounge area and really yummy desserts!!! The cheesecake is delicious:) We also ate breakfast one day in the restaurant and it was really good. Things that could be improved: there are no papers left at your door and there should be water or some type of beverages in the lobby for guests. In addition, my husband ordered chicken fingers out by the pool and one of them was not cooked through. We brought this to the attention of our server and it was handled in a professional manner. The manager waived our entire tab for the day and apologized. I thought this was courteous. Oh and the workout room is great too!!

We've been going to Galveston for years & have always wanted to stay at the Hotel Galvez & finally decided it was time. So for our May vacation, we booked it, after reading so many good reviews. It's absolutely beautiful to drive up to, with valets waiting to help you with your luggage and car. Walking through the big doors, you come into a huge lobby, decorated so nicely & you can easily spot the elegance in the architecture. You take in the sitting area, bar & one of the restaurants on the way in. There's also lots of chaise lounges inside facing the ocean view. Our Queen Deluxe room was very nice, although a little small. We didn't use all of the facilities offered, but the swimming pool was fantastic. Our only complaint was with housekeeping, not properly filling up the coffee service everyday, getting in despite the black button security feauture, and actually leaving our door open one day after they cleaned. Would we stay here again? YES.

Thanks for staying with us and sharing your comments. Glad you enjoyed your stay but wish my houskeepers would have done a better job for you. Your comments will be taken to heart and will be shared with my staff. Glad you enjoyed the pool and swim up bar, they are a well kept secret on the island.

My husband and I needed a little R&R for the weekend and chose the Hotel Galvez for a quick getaway. We were impressed from the moment we drove up. The valet staff was very genuine and helpful; the food was great and we LOVED the pool and swim up bar! I only got to spend a couple of hours in the Spa, but again the staff was amazing and my massage was heavenly. Everyone at the hotel seemed to go out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable and memorable. We will be back!
