“Good food & drink...and music”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2010

Been here for dinner twice in the past three months - once inside once outside.
Unless you know the routine, confusingBeen here for dinner twice in the past three months - once inside once outside.
Confusing, unless you know the routine.

Food first:
Go to the bar by the cash register to order & pay for your food, a buzzer lets you know when the food is ready and you pick it up in the back (left of the stage).
This is home-style food and its good with a fair-sized portion.
I’ve had and enjoyed the beef stew and green chili chicken enchiladas.

Drinks second:
Go to the bar (anywhere you can squeeze in) and order & pay for your drinks (I highly recommend their special margarita with the pineapple chunk – be forewarned as the pineapple is marinated in tequila!).

Live music inside makes this former Texan feel right at home.

Outside seating is nice, but the staff told me that the string of lights that are above the picnic tables could not turn on because they were for decorations only!.
But it has the potential to be a good place for romance, if ya catch my drift and I think ya do!

Note: this place fills up fast. It is best to stake out a table first, look over the menu and have one person in your party go place the order at the bar; otherwise you’ll be standing and eating/drinking.

“Mediocre, but deserves another chance!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 22, 2010

Was so looking forward to eating here and watching Ruby Dee and the Snakehandlers perform. Stood in line for 20 minutes to order food/drinks (strange) then not finding a place to sit (it's seat yourself, like most rest. in Fredericksburg), my girlfriend and I sat/stood at the tiny bar eating (many thanks to the bartender) while waiting for a table to free up, burgers are like hockey pucks by the way, margaritas are just okay, limited beer selection, good acoustics for the band, small dance floor, probably better in the warmer months when the patio is open. May give it another chance then.

“Laid back, could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2010

This place was cute, laid back. Food was very mediocre. We were there in January and the place was FREEZING. Many people were complaining but the staff did not seem concerned. It was ok, but I will try a different restaurant next time. Loved the town though!

“Filled with the spirit of its namesake...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2010

Hondo Crouch was a fun, quirky, laid back kind of guy, and the restaurant that bears his name lives up to his reputation. Once an old blacksmith shop, the building is full of atmosphere. On cold days, you can sit close to a roaring fire while your eye travels over the old limestone and heavy wood beams in the ceiling.

Here, things are different. The restaurant is pretty much self-serve. You pick up a menu, sit down at your table, decide what you want (this takes time...the offerings are all so tempting), then place your order at the bar. They hand you a buzzer that goes off when your meal is ready, then you stroll back to the kitchen to pick it up.

And what a meal! Served on old beer trays, everything we ordered was delicious and filling. Try the fajita-ladas, enchiladas topped with beef fajita meat. Or the Reuben Gone South. Or the Cedarstacker Club. Or the Slob Cobb Salad. Aw, heck...try everything! It's all good! And in a town known for its pricey restaurants, Hondo's is remarkably reasonable.

The restaurant features live music on weekends, and I understand the place gets packed to the rafters. If you're not into the crowd scene, your best bet would be either an early or late lunch. When we were there at 1:00 on a Saturday, we had a minimum wait for our food.

Don't go if you expect to be waited on hand and foot. Hondo used to say that "everybody was somebody in Luckenbach", the little town outside Fredericksburg that Hondo bought lock, stock and barrel in 1971. Well, in this restaurant, everybody is somebody, too. And that would be your own waitstaff.

Enjoy the quirkiness. Hondo would be pleased.

“might return if they had better service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2009

Charming place but I don't want to stand in line for an hour to order food on a Saturday night. Adding wait staff to this place would make up for the so-so food. How relaxing is standing in line for food or drinks? We decided to stay because we heard the food was worth waiting for- it's NOT. How can you listen to the band when you are inside standing in line? To be fair, most of the other places in F. do NOT have great food or service- just the charm. The staff was friendly, just didn't "wait".
