We dropped by on a Monday afternoon not knowing what to expect. No rangers and the bathroom were closed & locked up. But, you could still walk down to the tunnel (hand rails all the way for little kids or seniors) and walk the trail. We could smell the bats & see them at the end of the tunnel. Very informative sighs gave us a good insight into the bats. We picked up a great write up at the ner by Alamo Springs Cafe. Snot a far drive from Fredericksburg.

Be sure to call ahead - the bats fly out at different times and you don't want to miss them (we did the first attempt). The rangers usually give a short but informative speech before the fly-out.

We went late in the afternoon. Enjoyed the walk! No bats and it was an easy hike (we are hikers). Would go again!

This is an okay attraction, but if you show up without good quality binoculars, you are going to be very bored and disappointed. Try to arrive early so you can go down the trail to look in the cave. Be forwarned though - it is STINKY, lol!
