“Excellent!”

I came to the Kimbell for a special exhibit of Bernini drawings and clay sculptures. The design and installation of the exhibit was outstanding.
The permanent collection is small, but studded with jewels.
Lunch in the Buffet cafe was good and reasonably priced. The only caveat was a shortage of parking due to construction.

“A gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2013

This museum is small, free, and located in the midst of what I would call a "museum campus": The Kimbell, the Amon Carter, and the Modern Art museum, a botanic garden close-by, the National Cowgirl Museum, and the Science and History Museum. Parking is free and convenient to all.

The Kimbell is closed on Mondays, but open every other day of the week. We were lucky to be there during the Bernini, Sculpting in clay, exhibit for which there is a charge. The audiotour comes along with the ticket price. The tour also covers the paintings in the permanent collection, a very nice thing.

There's a small restaurant serving light lunches. What surprised us was that we saw parents with strollers in the gallery! Seems this is permitted except during peak times. Docent-led tours need a 2 week lead time. I wish I would have known. However, all the details are on the museum's website (www.kimbellart.org)

This museum is a real gem. I'd recommend it to anyone visiting and/or living in the area.

“One of everything”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

Since we were in Fort Worth for a conference of art teachers, the Kimball and the Museum of Modern Art were busy most days. We went to both on the closing day of the conference and the Kimball was still jammed. My wife teaches AP Art History and was impressed by what a "textbook" example the museum was. There is a little bit of all types of art work and good samples of many different periods and forms. The Bernini exhibit that the museum was currently hosting was first class and got me looking through my photo album at all the sculptures I had photographed when we were in Rome. She found that exhibit fascinating. Otherwise, although the gallery space is small, it is wide open and very accessible. I had talked with a teacher from Mississippi who had brought her class to these museums for a field trip. She was very impressed with the compact review of art history they provide.

“Small Museum Beautiful Collection”

Pricey $18 tickets, see it after 5pm on some nights and play half price. Small galleries, great traveling collections.
