“Great for a first time experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2012

Iconic Texas BBQ with inconsistent sides… Meaning, the brisket, chicken, sausage and ribs are just delicious as they are cooked on open pits. The sauce is NOT tomato based and adds a great flavor. The beans and potato sides are okay, but it’s the BBQ that brings it home as a big hit. This place is very crowded around dinner time and especially on weekends. The owners have added another restaurant on the property to handle the huge crowds. Also, they have local bands outside where folks can enjoy music while they are waiting to be seated. Families with small children have a playground area as well. Note: This place is BYOB and very friendly about it. So, if you are planning to experience good old Texas BBQ, take a small ice chest and fill it with your favorite beverages and be prepared to sit at a picnic table and enjoy the atmosphere while you wait for a table. It’s relaxing and fun.

“Great experience, but not the world beater all the reviews suggest”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2012

Not being from Texas, I guess it's hard to be objective about what a good Texas BBQ is.
However, I would say the overall experience was really enjoyable at Salt Lick, no matter who you are or where you come from. The place is huge, which helps the atmosphere, but definitely makes it harder on the service front. Our server was really helpful and really friendly, but the food came out much colder than I'd expect and he was then hard to track down again.
However, it was good value and the meat was great without being the greatest I've ever eaten. I mean, you've got to do something really fine to score a 5 on the food front, right!

“Nice cozy place for a dining on a winter night”

My first take is that this place is BYOB. I shoulda check out tripadvior before arrival. However, there is a gas station off fm 1826, get your beer off that place if you want to enjoy a shiner bock or a red dog with your ribs :). I had the thurman's plate, good portion of food. Would defintely go back here again whenever im in austin.

“Perfect for day trip and bbq!”

Although a bit dar from downtown Austin this place is one of the best BBQ places I've ever been to. Food is great and the BYOB concept gives you the chance to bring your favorite beer or wine to enjoy with your meal. Take time to wander around the place and relax with a glass of house wine. Overall, a must if you are a BBQ fan.
