My trust in TripAdvisor took a giant leap forward when I saw that Jimmy's was deemed one of the top ten eateries in Dallas. Not that I have anything at all against the French Room or Fearing's. but good food doesn't only exist in expensive, top-of-the-line restaurants. Jimmy's exalted ranking is particularly interesting in that "Jimmy's Food Store" isn't really a restaurant at all. It's a small mom-and-pop grocery overflowing with Italian imports, including a vast selection of wines. I first became aware of this Old East Dallas treasure through a friend who always showed up at our father-daughter campouts with steaks from Jimmy's. He told me that they sell restaurant-grade meat you won't find elsewhere, cut to order. But the meat counter also serves as an ordering station for Italian sandwiches which transport you - if not to the old country - at least to New York's Little Italy. There's almost always a wait, but it's worth it. If you're a first-timer, it would be sacrilege not to try the meatball sandwich. Most of the choices are a cardiologist's nightmare, but there are also turkey subs and tuna panini. They're served on fresh Italian bread with just enough crunch, and they're filling enough to split, or to save half for later. They sell a lot of them to go, but there are also a few tables in the front of the grocery cash register. And there's a back room. If Jimmy's itself feels like a discovery, the back room is like being invited into the inner sanctum. Subdued lighting, cheesy Italian murals, and the feeling that at any minute you might be asked to vacate so that La Famiglia can hold a meeting. If your meal isn't complete with satisfying your sweet tooth, the cannoli should do the trick. This is the antithesis of chain-restaurant dining. Parking next to the building is usually in high demand, and be careful backing out on to busy Fitzhugh or Bryan streets. And by the way, if you haven't ventured back since the place was heavily damaged by fire a couple of years ago, have no fear; it's exactly the same as you remember it.

A true Italian grocery and deli in lower Greenville. You MUST go here. Paul DiCarlo and his brother are warm and inviting and very helpful. We bought things to bring home on flight and they gave us a cooler to pack all the things in. The sandwiches are delicious!

I have lived in Dallas for 20+ years and finally tried Jimmy's. Great everything, atmosphere, prices and large sandwiches. I enjoyed looking throughout the market too! Come hungry!. I am a vegetarian and the options were limited, but it is a Italian deli. Everything looked so good, I wanted to eat meat!!
Don't miss it.
