My wife & I made a visit to Texas Discovery Gardens recently as part of our anniversary weekend celebration. We really enjoyed our time there. The different gardens are scattered throughout the parks acreage at the Texas State Fair. There is a small wildflower garden, a formal rose garden, a tropical area, & many others, including an enormous fountain and garden that is the perfect wedding location.
Inside, there are several displays of different small snakes & other critters that you may find in your garden. All of the place is very kid friendly.
Probably the best part of the whole attraction is the butterfly house. It's a large, tropical atrium that houses over a thousand butterflies from almost 50 different species. Some are small, and some are huge! All different colors and beautiful patterns. It's hard not to constantly take photos as they land all around you.
The entrance to the house is on the 2nd floor, and a winding bridge leads you through the treetops as you walk down to the ground floor area. They have a few more displays there, and a window into the hatchery where all the cocoons are hanging. We went during the monthly entomologist walk & talk, where a facility researcher walks with a group and discusses all things butterfly and answers any questions. It was fun and informative. The whole place was wonderful and also includes children's classrooms, a film area, and a gift shop. For $8, it's a great time and a great deal.
