This is the best kept secret in Dallas if you have kids or a family member who loves butterflies. It is relatively inexpensive and they they have butterflies you could only see if you traveled several different continents. Great place to take the kids or family and take photos. Not only is the butterfly house really neat and you can go through it at your own pace but the surrounding gardens are fantastic to walk through on a nice day. With the flowers and fountain it is a fantastic place to take pictures of the kids or family. Note the butterfly house is several degrees warmer than the outside so dress accordingly.

Go for the butterflies if that is your thing. The gardens are nice but cannot hold a candle to the Dallas Arboretum. Variety of butterflies and their colors was nice. I do a lot of photography and if you are patient you can get some nice shots. The entry fee is $8 but fortunately we were not charged separately for parking. The butterfly exhibit is quite warm and humid so brace yourself

We went to the Discovery Gardens specifically to see the butterflies. They give you a handout with the different butterflies on it, so you can identify them. However, the butterflies move around too fast for easy identification.
It's very warm in there, so be prepared to remove a coat. The outside gardens look great from the window, but we couldn't get out into them because a wedding was setting up. We will make a second trip to see the gardens.

Not much to do in Dallas during the holidays, so we decided to visit the Butterfly House. The weather was exactly as prescribed by the Texas Discovery Gardens web site: soon after the 10am opening, on a cloudy weekday. And there were some butterflies about; just not very many, and not a wide variety. The brochure lists 28 species, but we saw only a few. There was a "release" of newly emerged butterflies, but they were mostly just hanging in a mesh container, gathering energy before flying away. Nothing to see or photograph there. I was able to get 3-4 OK photos, but there were very few opportunities. It was rather disappointing.
