Hotel Zaza calls itself an "art house and social gallery." It's located in the revitalized uptown museum district in Dallas, and like most areas in transition, there's a strong arts community into which the hotel positions itself. The hotel is well designed (though lighting is just a little too W hotel in the 90s) and the staff was kind and attentive.
And yet, I had the impression most of the time that they were working just a little too hard at all that hipness. Hipster messages on the throw pillows. Body-form wall sconces. Photos of grizzled, 70s and 80s hipsters (the original ones). The hotel also sells its art, so it really is a gallery in some ways, though not in the fullest sense as the art decorates the space, rather than the gallery space designed to enhance the presentation of the art.
The room was comfortable though mine was oddly shaped - long and narrow, so that there was about 24" or so between the foot of the bed and the armoire, and the armoire was the only closet space in the room.
The bathroom was most well done but everything was just a little too close - not that the bathroom was small, but that they put so much into the space. There was a countertop presentation of men's toiletries that was for sale at above-market prices. That felt a little too commercial.
Wifi was free.
