I stayed, showered, past out on the crazy comfy bed. Woke up, ate for free in the lobby, sat and collected my thoughts with free coffee.
This hotel is great way to get away from the rig and still be near everything

Very limited options in Cuero and this is definitely the nicest but it sells out so book early and don't expect any special treatment for being a member of Best Western Rewards

We stayed one night at this Best Western because we were attending a social function in a nearby even smaller town, and in this fairly remote part of Texas there are not many hotel options. Plus, I am partial to Best Westerns because they are usually clean.

Upon arrival we did not receive the warmest of greetings; before we even stepped inside there was a large homemade NO VACANCY sign slapped up on the door but since we had a reservation we figured it didn't apply to us.

So we entered and walked up to the desk where the clerks were haggling on the phone with a customer over room availability (or lack thereof) and when we got the attention of one of them she checked us in and then proceeded to lay out in her words, "the hotel rules": no smoking and no pets, and if we got caught with either we'd be charged some high priced penalty - got that?

The room itself was nice but when we first entered it smelled funny. I thought it smelled like bathroom odor (if you get my drift) but my husband insisted it was probably some odd-smelling cleanser they used. Other than that it was a large room with a sofa and desk area, king bed, and a large flat screen television.

The linens (sheets on the bed, towels in the bathroom) looked and smelled clean. Even though it smelled funny the bathroom looked clean and had a convenient soap/shampoo/conditioner dispenser in the shower as well as soap/lotion at the sink. I did not bring my laptop on this short trip but my tablet powered up just fine so I was able to check e-mails, and otherwise stay connected.

Breakfast in the morning was fine, plenty of coffee and juice but by the time we got there all that was left was pastries, yogurt and fruit which was fine by me since I don't a eat big breakfast anyway, but if you want the hearty foods like eggs, meat, and toast you better get there when it opens.

This hotel could be used as a business school model for teaching Supply and Demand. Apparently there are few decent (read modern) hotels within a 30-mile radius of Cuero, Texas so this particular Best Western uses that to its advantage and tends to be overpriced. We paid around $150 (tax included) for one night at this small town hotel and that was the discounted AARP rate.

Talking to people at the party we attended they said that there are a lot of gas and oil employees that travel to the area and that's why hotels - even the mom and pop motels - are so expensive. Looks like an opportunity for other hotel chains to get in on the action.

Finally, when we were leaving the next morning the guy sitting at the front desk didn't even give us a nod or a "thanks," or "have a great day" - for $150 bucks a night you would think he could muster up a Thank You.

Room Tip: Hotel rooms are scarce in rural Texas, book early!
