“Exxxccellent food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2011

We went to Italian side of the restaurant for our anniversary, and the food was absolutely the best. The dark atmosphere was perfect for an anniversary dinner, not so good for reading a menu though. The waitstaff, and I guess owner/manager were very attentive. We will definitely be back.
Priced very well for the food and service.

“Food was fair; response to feedback was ABOMINABLE”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2011

We arrived hungry--looking forward to a tasty Italian meal. The place was practically full -- a good sign.

Everything is a la carte, and there is a good sized selection, plus several specials. The waiter who came to tell us about the specials spoke quickly and with a slight accent so we had trouble understanding him. I asked him to speak slowly so we could understand; he did.

It was a late for us so we ordered a light meal -- and something uncomplicated we expected to be good. My wife ordered a chicken "dipped in parmesan with brandi sauce." I had chicken parmigiano. They were cooked properly, and the portions were quite ample. Neither was particularly tasty (although she loved the vegetables that came with her meal).

When the chef came by to ask how everything was, we told him the food was unremarkable. He said if we wanted something remarkable we should have ordered one of his specials. I responded that he shouldn't have anything on the menu he didn't think was good.

He blew us off (apparently if a customer doesn't like the food, he has bad taste) and went to a table were he knew the guests. We are two who like to support local businesses and whom he will never get to know. I know what I like--and it does not include rude chefs who serve bland food.

“The meal was good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2011

We only went to The Bistro because we were told they have good lasagna. We did not have a reservation and it did not seem to matter to them. When we got there and was handed a menu lasagna was not on it anywhere. We asked and the owner told us that its only served at lunch. But he did say he would make it for us if we wanted. We decided to be adventurous and instead order form the menu. I had the chicken breast with artichoke they call it something else but I'm not sure now what the name is. The breast were cooked to perfection and it was very delicious. There was a small side order of vegetables on the plate. At first glance I would have thought there should be some sort of pasta but I actually had plenty to eat and had to take half the meal home so it was plenty. I also had a salad it was not gourmet just romaine and dressing. Bread was also served and it was nice as well. I am a taster so I tasted my sons fettucini alfredo it was blain and I would not have liked it no garlic just cream. I plan on a visit for lunch they serve 13 different meals and it only cost 7.98 this dinner time meal was 10.95 for the chicken and another charge for the salad I don't remember that price but I feel it was comparable to the prices of today. The staff was great and we asked a lot of questions and if they did not know the answer they always went and got the owner. So we bugged them plenty and they were always happy to accommodate us. One thing that was strange was that the staff seem to rotate the tables. Not the same waiter twice different ones to fill glasses, bring bread, bring your food. Not sure who got the tip it was left on the table.

“TOO EXPENSIVE FOR CONROE, SMALL PORTIONS, BAD SERVICE, GRUMPY OWNER”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2011

This restaurant location has had several owners. The one currently is a combined Italian Bistro and Rex Steakhouse. We have dined with the new location several times, so this review represents multiple visits. Here is the good news. The food is good. Now for the bad news. The chef/owner (Dino) is from New York and he thinks he will suceed acting like a New York restaurant owner in Conroe. The overall dining experience can be stressful. You are not treated like a customer or guest in their house. You are more treated like you have come to their house and they are doing you a favor. Don't ask them to do something differently than what they do because they will tell you right away they don't do it your way. If you do want something changed, be prepared to enter a negotiation, debate, or a rebuke from the chef/owner. On several occasions we have ordered drinks. One time we had to go to the bar to get them. The other time the cocktail person did not know the wine list and was puzzled when we ordered a 'by the glass' wine we had gotten the prior visit. A dish we liked (Russian River Sea Bass) was a large portion on one visit. On the next visit, we were shocked that the portion was cut in half. We didn't order a salad, but the portion was so small that we had to order a salad afterwards. On one visit, we asked about the size of the steaks and the waiter informed us they did not weigh the steaks but said they were about xx size. When a table nearby had that steak delivered, it did not look the size the waiter said. I guessed at a small weight and the chef came out and blasted us on "how offended" he was at the comment. well, I was offended that he was offended. It would have been better if they put the cooked size of the steak on the menu and stop the drama. Friends of our had gone there and asked about dessert. The wait person was so rude to them (in their 70's) that they talk to the chef/owner (Dino) about the experience. Prices are high for the Lake Conroe area. Be prepared to spend about $35 per person (excluding drinks). A goat cheese salad is $9.00! This is ridiculous. As you can see, this is too much drama, stress, negotiation, and hassle for what you get. We won't be going back. I suggest either they change their attitudes and service or go on back to New York.
