“Good food, marginal service”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

Café Eccel does a great job with their food but their service is a lot like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. The last visit occurred when the restaurant was fairly empty and service was slow and unattentive. It took three times to flag the server down to get drink refills. If this were a one time thing, it could be attributed to a poor server but it happens a large percentage of the time so this is clearly a management problem.

On the food side, Eccel has great desserts. The steaks are good, the wood fired pizzas are generally good and they have some excellent fish. Try their signature strawberry tart.

The restaurant can get a bit loud when it is crowed but that is a function of being in a old historic building (it was once city hall).

The cost of Eccel is about the same as the pricey restaurants in town. Our meal for two was $92.00 plus tip for two entrees, one dessert and three drinks.

“Surprisingly good food-”
Reviewed April 27, 2013 via mobile

Take a chance and stop by-- don't let the outside fool you. Not great ambience, but it is what it is. A good rest urant in a college town. The Mediterranean appetizer was outstanding. The margharita pizza was one of the best I have had in a while. Good beer selections (bottle only). A definite must visit.

“nice wine bar in college town”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

Nice place for wine and pizza. They would benefit by increasing variety of the pizzas. Parking is tough for busy weekends, ie football and parents weekend. Service was good. Would definitely make reservations ahead of time to avoid the wait outside.

“Fine dining in walking distance of Northgate”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

I eat at this restaurant on special occasions while attending Texas A&M in the 90's and recently went there for Parents Weekend. The food is fantastic - I highly recommend the corn chowder and pizza's. The atmosphere is very good - it's a dark and cool place that does not have loud music playing in the background that would force you to have to yell at your companion. You can walk here from Northgate, but you won't see many rowdy students eating by themselves since the menu is on the expensive side. I recommend this restaurant for special occasions, like taking your folks here if you are a student.

“Great Atmosphere!”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We had the wood fired pizza and ate outside. It was a cool night but not too bad. There are lights at night outside. The waiter was really good despite being so busy for a Saturday night.
